Because Dark Horse believed that they would not be able to acquire the original covers as part of their licensing agreement for Samurai Executioner, the publisher contacted David Mack to create the covers for the series.

"They asked me to do the covers for this, which is great because I've been a fan of Koike and Kojima since I was a kid," Mack noted.

However, the deal fell through when Dark Horse was able to acquire the orignal covers for the Japanese series.
