Skipping Kindergarten & Its Effects |
From David Mack: |
I skipped kindergarten and went straight to first grade too.
I was always the youngest in the class, and I seemed to do fine, but I did always wonder what it would have been like if I had went to kindergarten and went through school being in the same classes with the other age group class where I was maybe closer to their age. |
David Mack later noted: |
I had a similar experience - in that my mother was a first grade teacher and taught me things at home early on, and I skipped kindergarten, and my performance was fine as far as learning... but...
I do kind of remember feeling weird that all of the other kids already knew each other and they seemed to all know how the structure of things worked, where I remember being a little confused about the structure of things early on. I kept trying to draw and talk with other students... and the teachers sometimes seemed upset that I didn't magically know how to fall in line with the way the other kids were doing things, and I didn't know the terms that everyone else in the school used.
Also, I was probably a year younger in just regular social development than everyone else around so that was probably a factor.
But eventually, I guess I figured that out. But I do remember being confused about the social structure and class structure for a while. |

Jamie Rich Mentions David Mack During Interview |
From ComicsWorthReading.com: |
How did you start working together?
Jamie Rich: It’s a very Portland story. This town is too small, too many comic book people, we can’t avoid one another. David Mack had seen Joëlle’s work at one of the local comic book shows, and he made Joëlle show it to Diana Schutz at Dark Horse, and that lead to Joëlle drawing the story in the Sexy Chix anthology that my good friend Sarah Grace McCandless wrote. |
