WFC: June 6-10, 2004
and the John Woo project
MON, 6/7/04, 9:57 p.m. - In Response To: OT: Rick Mays (HotRob)
The latest news I have is that he is also currently drawing the Iron
Fist story.
And before that (late last year) he and I worked on a video game together
for John Woo and Electronic Arts.
I wrote the characters and back story and did some layouts, and Rick did the visual designs and an action scene intro.
Hey there,
Does anyone know what happened with Rick on the Robin series? He
only ended up doing two issues but was announced as the new ongoing artist.
Or what he is doing now (hopefully Agents:Tigerliily) apart from the Iron Fist covers at Marvel?
Cheers!
Re: ashcan question
MON, 6/7/04, 6:24 a.m. - In Response To: ashcan question (jen)
It is probably real. there were I think 3 different home-made ashcans
that I made in the course of 1994 and 95.
Proabably between 50 to 200 made of each one. I don't remember if they
are #ed or not.
i have a question about the (original?) kabuki ashcan..
hopefully david or someone else will be able to help me out here..
a couple of years ago, i paid good money on ebay for what was supposedly
an original kabuki ashcan. it *looks* like it could/should be the ashcan,
but the signature doesn't look much like david's. i thought that was odd
when received it, but i figured maybe it was signed way back in the day
and his signature has evolved.
anyway, i was looking around on nohtv.com the other day for the first time in a long while and saw the scan of the kabuki ashcan on the site..
mine doesn't look *anything* like that.
my question is this: was there another ashcan? or was i scammed?

Good job, Chris! Your art looks great as always.
And I think it even shows a huge improvement from the stuff you showed
me in New York a couple years back. Especially as far as the "Kabuki style" stuff goes.
I dig your other art I saw on your link you posted before too.
Meh. Totally not satisfied with how this came together.
I really despise the scanner I am forced to settle with.
I might redux it, put it together agian , and see if it looks better
then.
Hmm...

Re: Ok, who can get me a "retailer incentive" ALCH
MON, 6/7/04, 1:19 p.m. - In Response To: Ok, who can get me a "retailer
incentive" ALCHEMY? (SimplyJD)
This stuff usually drives me nuts, but as someone who hase
virtually a complete collection of these books and minis, I'd really like
to have one of the upcoming Kabuki: The Alchemy retailer incentive issues...
Anyone?
Hi JD,
Retailers can order any amount they want of the regular cover, and the
Maleev cover. For the same price. So you can get a Maleev cover just by asking your retailer to order one for you.
The retailer incentive is that for every 10 of the regular cover that
they order, they also get one Maleev cover FREE!
But they can order as many as they want as well. So if you ask any retailer,
it should be no problem. They have ordered already, but they are still
able to place re-orders until the book ships.
Best,
DM

Kabuki news and thanks to YOU on this board!
TUE, 6/8/04, 10:56 a.m. -
The first wave of advance orders from retailers for the new Kabuki series are in...
And the orders are much better than expected!
This is because you as readers have asked your retailers to order the
new Kabuki series ahead of time.
Retallers have told me that the word of mouth demand for the new Kabuki
series, and the exceptional demand for all of the Kabuki trades are the reason they keep Kabuki in stock and are ordering the new series.
I want to give all of you a big THANK YOU for taking the initiative
to try Kabuki. The new series, and the trades. And a big THANK YOU for personally taking the initiative to ask your comic store to order it for you.
Your personal request for the Kabuki is what keeps the book alive and available in stores. Ten years of Kabuki, and still going strong, because of you!
So thank you to my long time Kabuki readers, and thank you to the brand new readers who are picking up the collections or are just beginning with this new Kabuki series. Please let me know what you think of the trades and the new series as you read it
Kindest regards,
David Mack
Re: How do you Pitch KABUKI to someone?
TUE, 6/8/04, 1:09 p.m. - In Response To: Re: How do you Pitch KABUKI
to someone? (Charlie)
Showing the art and putting the book in their hand is a
good thing. But i need the one sentence pitch to sum up kabuki to someone who has no idea what kabuki is?
For example, to tell someone about bone i describe it as exactly
like Lord of the rings with its scope, magic, and scale, except you take
out Frodo and put in Bugs Bunny.
Thanks
Charlie
Hi Charlie,
Thanks for your passionate support for Kabuki in your store!
I really appreciate that. It makes all the difference.
I put a short synopsis about what each volume is about on the back of
each Kabuki trade. So when someone asks me what it is about at a signing, I just hand them the trade and ask them to read it on the back.
I also have all of these listed on my site at davidmack.net.
I hope that is a helpful suggestion for you.
It works pretty well for me. The one on the back of Circle of Blood,
or Metamorphosis are the blurbs that I show people most.
Kindest regards,
David
Re: Kabuki-Alchemy DF Variant Cover
WED, 6/9/04, 2:05 p.m. - In Response To: Kabuki-Alchemy DF Variant
Cover (Klaus)
I know David Mack said before, he thought it was a virgin
cover of the regular art. But the text, which accompanies the picture in
the Previews solicitation says "not actual art". Does anybody have confirmed
info on this?
Thanks,
Klaus
Hi Klaus,
At this moment, I think it looks like there is not going to be a different cover from Dynamic.
But I think they will be offering a signed version of the Maleev cover.

Movie? (Gang Lu)
How about Chiaki Kuriyama (Gogo from Kill Bill). I'm sure
there's a roll for her.
I think she's great. She's also in the upcoming Sin City film, and she
was great and Battle Royal.
She could easily fill one of the character roles in Kabuki.
