In a funny way, this reminded me of myself when I was planning to start Kabuki.

I actually did not want to draw Kabuki. I originally planned it as a story that I would only write.

Believe it or not in 1993 I was planning to write it with Brian Bendis doing the art. He did several Kabuki character studies and sample pages. So did a couple other potential artists. It was all good, but the art and the writing still felt seperate. It didn't feel like one complete creature to me. So at Bendis' insistence, I set about trying to draw it myself if only to make the art and the writing indistinguishable from each other. In doing this I felt like the each discipline helped me improve at the other.
