In Response To: David -- ever an influence, down at NKU! (Jubal)

Hi Jubal,

I remember making that diagram for chemistry class. I didn't know that it is still being used as an example. Thanks for the story!

Please give my regards to Julia Bedell!

Best,

David

: Well,,,

: in my Chemistry 100 course at Northern, taught by a
: professor Julia Bedell, the class had gotten to
: acids/bases, and more specifically, how batteries
: work.

: Prof Bedell (a very good teacher) likes to take the extra
: time to incorperate the class into various examples,
: when teaching a new concept... and on this ocasion,
: she had prepared a dissected car battery for display,
: as well as a smaller (looked to be a AA) alkaline
: battery, dissected on a stand, with a chart behind it
: labeling the parts. The alkaline battery display, she
: introduced as the work of a student whom she had
: taught eight years ago (or so), who later became a
: cartoonist and returned as an alumni to speak. I
: immediately thought -"No, it couldn't be!"
: (I only know of one other "cartoonist" who
: graduated NKU about that time, Todd Hueser, but he
: never returned to speak, to my knowledge).

: So I waited until after the class ended, and asked if she
: could remember the student's name who made the
: display. She couldn't right away, but did remember
: that he had an impressive portfolio of
: asian-influenced art. Immediately I was like,
: "Was it David Mack?" and to her answer in
: the affirmative, I said "Yeah, I'm a fan of his
: work!" She was delighted, and related that she
: used the display quite often, because people liked the
: colorful way it was composed, and it still held up
: well (though she did remark that the text was a bit
: too small). I told her I would report this story to
: the message board here.

: Anyway, it gave me a chance to have a nice conversation
: with a respected faculty member, which also provided a
: cool little twist on how I looked at the rest of that
: day. Like, am I truly giving all I've got on all of my
: projects, and will what I do be remember after i'm
: gone?

: And, through this life strange and wonderful, it is nice
: to see examples of others who HAVE (and are) putting
: out 100% and create a resounding effect on their
: environment. Not to get too deep in philosophical
: mind-ramblings... but I thought it was worth
: recounting!
: Jubal
