Well I just finished inking the first set of characters that I didn't create about a week ago. It's all the Noh operatives, with Kabuki in the middle. There are some parts of it which I'm pretty happy with , while others I'm still cringing about. Basically when I ordered a slew of Kabuki comics, David gratiously signed all of them (thanks go out to Anh of course) and gave me a Fan edition to boot. Of course I was completely taken aback and so I bought a thank you card,.....but some how it felt as though it wasn't enough, so I got cracking on this pic. I've basically got the versions in pencil then in ink and am currently trying(being the operative word, trying very hard) to colour it. Then I'll send the entire package off to the man as a thanks for everything including inspiration. Once I've scanned them in I'll tell you my website url, right now only the archives is up and only for three years, my first three into trying to draw in a comic book style. I asked David this question about 6 months ago. What books do you read. This is a lowdown of my stuff: Everything from Marvel Knights....(except that punisher/wolverine, and original punisher minis) Blade of the Immortal (the best creator owned book bar none) Lone wolf and cub ,...when DH gets it's ass in gear and prints them. I've got a few of the original first issues, amazing stuff. Anything written by Alan Moore. Planetary Authority Shockrockets and Empire Dawn Hellblazer 100 Bullets Red Star abd a few superhero stuff ,....oh yeah and anything by Frank and David of course.......anything :)

Faraday:--

Okay, you asked for it, so here it is. First off: I work at a comic book store in my free time, so I have access to reading all the store's merch without buying (I only buy what I really like)... Thus there are probably a ton of things I enjoy that won't be on this list...

[things I buy in any format available] Madman, Detective Comics, Batman/Huntress, Orion, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Sam & Twitch, Kabuki/Kabuki Agents, Powers, Daredevil, The Atomics, Marquis, Empty Zone, The Nocturnals

[things I buy in trade paperback format only] Sin City, The Sandman [must be written by Mr. Gaiman], Warren Ellis' run on Stormwatch and Hellblazer, Cerebus, Transmetropolitan, a lot of the Marvel Knights line, Hitman, Preacher, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Blade Of The Immortal, Lone Wolf & Cub, Astro City, JLA, JSA, Starman, Hellboy, Jhonen Vasquez's work, Stray Bullets, Whiteout, Nobody

[things I look for in the back issue bins] Sandman Mystery Theatre, Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (only the Jack Kirby issues)

That's pretty much it (I think). I'm sure I forgot a thing here or there...

NickCurtis - Aug 9, 2000 4:55 AM - 490 of 858

I'm of the mind that if the Marvel Knights team are going to do Daredevil Visionaries: David Mack (which Mr. Mack has implied they will be doing), then they should load the trade up with "extras" -- script pages, design layouts, the cover processes, etc. What do the rest of you think? Should we all start writing to Joe Quesada and demanding this!!! :)

nick curtis - nogo@bestweb.net

Guest_Faraday - Aug 9, 2000 1:39 PM - 491 of 858

See I dunno how it works at Marvel with trades since they don't release them half as often as someone like DC and then they probably have their own rules about what extra stuff to put in It's all this corporate rubbish , I dunno. The only guy I've seen that's decided to put more stuff in his trades making it worthwhile for someone who already has the issues is David,.....but at Marvel, that's a difgferent story..

NickCurtis - Aug 9, 2000 7:04 PM - 492 of 858

Yes, Faraday, Marvel is a different story. It is a major corporation and it probably does have it's own rules, as you pointed out. The question then becomes how much pull Joe Quesada has, I guess. Regardless, in the theoretical, perfect world scenario: Would you want all those goodies, as I described, in a Daredevil Visionaries: David Mack?

nick curtis - nogo@bestweb.net

SithMutha - Aug 9, 2000 8:39 PM - 493 of 858

Hey no one messes with Warren!

David, if you are reading these I just sent you a big old order for your back issues. I am waiting in anticipation for them like that kid in the Christmas movie waiting for his little Orphan Annie decoder ring.

Guest_Faraday - Aug 10, 2000 2:05 PM - 494 of 858

That goes without saying. It's always good to get extra stuff that didn't make it into the original comics. It's like a DVD , you get the cinematic viewing and sound in the theatres but then you get all that extra goodness in the DVD, interviews , missing scenes etc. It really makes it worth while. With a monthly comic you get the feeling of reading something new. And if it's good, like all the DD issues thus far, it'll keeep you waiting for that next issue due out at some point in time, usually one month, but whatever. With the trade it should be full of stuff that wasn't there so that it can appeal and be worth your while to get as well, not just an introduction by some guy that had nothing to do with the book in the first place, but a whole bunch of stuff, that's what trade paper backs should be all about. Oh dear seems like I subbled on a warrenphile fanatic. Listen SithMutha I wasn't trying to diss Warren , all I was saying is that I don't agree with some of his views and lately the stuff he's been doing isn't really pulling me in. Apart from Planetary I don't get any other Warren related books. City of Silence, and his avatar stuff and well as pointed out I don't get Transmepolitan, although many people say I should, and finally his Counter-X stuff really didn't appeal. I only got X-force for the portacio art, story was OK but nothing like Stormwatch and Authority. Lets hope his Image stuff is back grabbing me like his other stuff has done.

NickCurtis - Aug 11, 2000 4:35 AM - 495 of 858

IN REGARDS TO THE DAREDEVIL TRADE PAPERBACK::: I agree with Faraday, that a trade paperback (at this time) serves a greater purpose than just making the story available. It is a method of making a popular tale more complete -- bringing in aspects, like "behind the scenes", which flesh out the comic run. I was VERY disappointed with the DAREDEVIL VISIONARIES: KEVIN SMITH...in other ways than just the story, a story which I thought was excellent until the anti-climatic ending. It was just a collection and nothing else, very sad really...

nick curtis - nogo@bestweb.net

PS If anyone here wants to make their voice heard on the issue of DAREDEVIL VISIONARIES: DAVID MACK -- please go to Joe Quesada's EVENT COMICS web page, there is a message board there for MARVEL KNIGHTS related questions/comments. Post something. If Joe here's the idea enough times, he might just do it...

NickCurtis - Aug 11, 2000 4:42 AM - 496 of 858

IN REGARDS TO WARREN ELLIS: This might be one of those cases wherein it is better to agree to disagree. Faraday's point was not an attack on Ellis (whom Faraday does appear to have an appreciation of), but rather a commentary on the difference between Mack and Ellis when it came to fans. Dr. David/Mr. Mack is probably one of the most approachable comic creators out there -- and he tries very hard to continue to be this.

Everybody should feel welcome to this message board. Bringing to us a diversity of opinions and thoughts. Let's keep up the good work. :)

Guest_David Mack - Aug 11, 2000 2:17 PM - 497 of 858

Hey friends,

David Mack here. I'm sorry it has been a bit since my last post. I've just finished a big Dardevil deadline with an issue in the painted story (in Dardevil 16-17). I've been focusing on it completely. After I take care of some things that I need to keep up on, I will try to answer all the recent posts tonight or over the weekend.

I also want to mention the great WIzard world convention in CHicago. I'll give you a run down in the next post.

Warmest regards,

DM

TheVigilante - Aug 11, 2000 8:44 PM - 498 of 858

David and thr rest of the usual guys,

DO you have an opinion on who the best DD villain is?

Guest_Faraday - Aug 12, 2000 3:53 AM - 499 of 858

Eh, well since I've never really read any DD except for the MK stuff and some Karl Kesel issues and the Frank stuff, it'd have to be Kingpin. I love the Kevin run where he says 'You're no Kingpin, you're not even close.' Yup just a complete badass. He knows everything about our hero so he toys with him while he's still trying to get on his feet.

NickCurtis - Aug 12, 2000 4:46 AM - 500 of 858

I would have to agree with Faraday. The Kingpin of Crime is definately one of the most interesting (and powerful) villians in the Daredevil mythos. I keep laughing about how he was a "failed" SpiderMan villian originally--that always cracks me up. After the Kingpin, I'd have to go with Elektra or even David's Echo. These girls both had twisted histories, both were great enemies of Daredevil, even though neither was really a "villian".

nick curtis nogo@bestweb.net

TheVigilante - Aug 12, 2000 10:13 AM - 501 of 858

No one mentions Bullseye? Geez. Yeah, I think Wilson Fisk is his greatest foe, but I think Bullseye is second.

Guest_Faraday - Aug 12, 2000 11:21 AM - 502 of 858

Nah , echo comes a very close second, she's just too deadly in costume and out of costume, I also like the fact that we know her well enough in the 3 issues (I've not read my new DD yet as it's waiting in the UK for me)that she's like a real person. Realistic dialogue....

NickCurtis - Aug 12, 2000 3:36 PM - 503 of 858

Vigilante: I was never a fan of Bullseye as a creation. While Frank Miller's run was amazing, I think Bullseye was a weak point -- I just never got a feel for him.

Faraday: I don't know Echo that well yet. She's intriguing (and well done), but I see her as David Mack's ELEKTRA. I'm waiting for the moment I say: Wow, this couldn't have been Elektra, this was Echo! When that happens, I'll agree with you.

nick curtis nogo@bestweb.net

Guest_Faraday - Aug 13, 2000 3:30 AM - 504 of 858

Man and we were doing so well agreeing with each other on most things :). I like the fact that DD doesn't have a regular writer but rather people coming along to tell good stories, with a begining , middle and end. As for the Kevin ending, well I thought it was very well constructed. What really pissed me off was this a-hole on the event mesage boards that somehow found out the identity of the villain manipulating DD for that arc before the issue that made his appearance came out. The ultimate spoiler, and the guy didn't even bother warning anyone. It was really the most disgraceful thing anyone's ever done to me through the net. Just really sad. But overall I thought issue 7 was absolutely brilliant in terms of dialogue'With a few well structured sentences I take away his humanity' or something like that, it was really well put so I wasn't dissappointed in any way. As for Echo, she seems to be catching on, as Quesada is apparently trying to get her own thing after David's finished his storyarc. I'm well up for something like that.

Oh yeah and David, take your time, well all realise it must take ages for the painted stuff and you've had alla the cons and stuff so take it easy :)

NickCurtis - Aug 13, 2000 5:26 AM - 505 of 858

Hey Faraday:

I actually loved the Kevin Smith story arc right up to the Mysterio ending -- I thought that was a weak ending. Everything seemed so cosmic, but then became so mudane. Anti-climactic. Of course, if the ending had lived up to the rest of the plot then that would have altered DD forever, and we don't want that either. This was my problem with Kevin Smith's run -- he created a lose-lose situation in my mind.

As for the ECHO one-shot/mini-series...I would really enjoy seeing David explore her more. She might make my list for sure with more time...

Guest_David Mack - Aug 14, 2000 12:27 AM - 506 of 858

Hey freinds,

Heres my posting about the Chicago con.

This was my favorite Chicago show yet. Great con. Gareb and the Wizard crew were very nice to me. There were a lot of high points of the show.

First, I want to thank all of you from the message boards that showed up. I met a lot of silent lurkers on the board. You know who you are! I really enjoyed meeting all of you.

This show was sooo busy. My table was really packed the whoooole time with new and old readers. A lot of Daredevil readers were there to pick up Kabuki for the first time.

I was there with Anh at my two tables and Andy Lee had two next to me. It was a joy to be at the show with Andy again.

I did a Marvel Knights panel promoting the current DD story through #15 but mostly to promote and answer questions for the four issues of Daredevil that I am currently painting starting with DD #16 (scripted by my friend Brian BENDIS).

The "Marvel Knights dinner/Kevin Smith's birthday party" was a blast. They had a cake made to look like silent Bob complete with frosting cigerette butts.

Anh, Andy and I were there at the private dinner with all the Marvel Knights gang and other talented friends (Quesada, Nanci,Kevin Smith & Jason Mews, Jae Lee, Paul Jenkins, Richard Isanove, Jose Villabura, Joe Linsner & Eva, Tyler Mane (Sabertooth from the X-men movie), Tim Sale, Jeff Loeb, Vetigo's Alex Alonzo, Bill Jemis(the new President of Marvel), and more that I will think of later.

I signed at NEXTPLANETOVER where they gave away free Kabuki comics to introduce new readers. Signed at the Moore Creations booth with Clay Moore.

Something I noticed at this show was the huge amount of international fans. I saw fans in Chicago that I hve first met when signing in their native countries, (including France, Holland, Germany, Spain...). It was a pleasure to this time welcome them to the states.

It was also great to see so many of the other talented artists in artis alley. And a lot of readers showed me their work too, which was very good.

I'm sure I'll think of more things to post later. I just got in and need to get back to work.

I just want to thank all of you for making it such a great show and letting me know what you get out of the Kabuki books.

DM

Response to Blankboy from poat 450:

Thanks for hunting down all the Kabuki issues and reading my DD stuff. SInce you asked, the other books that I would recomend are the REFLECTIONS series. While these sometimes show some of my art process for Kabuki Daredevil stuff, they also have all kinds of artwork and stuff that I've done outside of my Kabuki work (like a lot of the pinups and covers taht I've done for other books) and some work outside of comis, like oil paintings, sculptures, and Album covers. So if you are trying to track dowm my pre-kabuki cover work etc., this lets you know what it is and presents most of it in the Reflections books themselves.

As for More Marvel Knight stuff, yes I intend to continue working with them in one capacity or another. First, I plan to paint my next Kabuki series after I'm done painting the new DD story (16-18 0rder from the current PREVIEWS).

Then I may do an ECHO series, or do more cover work or write something else with Rick Mays (artist from Scarab) doing the art.

Response to Vigilante as to "what is better Daredevil or Kabuki?"

Each is their own unique challenge for me. Dardevil is a collaborative process which I enjoy, but Kabuki is me totally doing everything myself which I also enjoy. I have a taste for diversity and I just enjoy each for waht it is in itself.

Guest_David Mack - Aug 14, 2000 12:51 AM - 508 of 858

Response to Faraday in post 452:

Thanks for mentioning the NOHTV.com site in order for blankboy to track down my earlier stuff. Anh Tran also has some of this stuff on e-bay.

Hey Nick,

Thanks for joining in an mentioning my story in Crypt of Dawn #2. I do like that one and I plan to do more work of that nature in a future series.

TO VIGILANTE in post 458:

Other marvel characters in my new DD run?

Lets see, Peter parker is in it. I drew Thor flying in a background panel on one page. J. Jonah Jameson yells at Ben Urich a lot.

There is a cool part in which ben Urich recaps the story of DD from his own journalistic perspective. This sequence spotlights all of DD's cool character line up from issues past up to the present.

Guest_David Mack - Aug 14, 2000 1:01 AM - 509 of 858

TO lostlo in post 460:

I hope you are feeling better and more alive.

Did you see Dardevil #13 yet? I'm really happy with Isonove's coloring. Of course Quesada did a great job as usual also. I'm very happy with each issue so far.

I should also really publicly thank Quesada for giving independant writers/artists like myself and Bendis a chance to work on the Daredevil series.

It's been a whirlwind response ever since.

To Nick, Vigilante, Mark, and Faraday: Thanks for volunteering the DD information, and I'm glad this board has proved a forum for you to interact with one another.

Guest_David Mack - Aug 14, 2000 1:14 AM - 510 of 858

Response to Myomyomyomyo in 471:

Thanks for the kind words about my work, and for listing me in such a talented league of writers.

I'm glad you like the DD stuff. As for the storytelling style in DD, take a look at my REFLETIONS books. Specifically, REFLECTIONS #3 shows my layout work for Daredevil.

If you like the DD story, let me know what you think of my recent painted story in KABUKI.

To Nick and Faraday:

Thanks for ansering and expanding on some of the points Myomyomyomyo mentioned. Again, I appreciate the mention of www.NOHTV.com as a place to check out some of the behind the scenes aspects of my work in Kabuki and DD.

Glad you guys are able to help each other with info and opinions.

Hey Faraday, Scarab # 5 is offered in the next Previews. THe Scarab series goes to #8 and it is a wild downward spiral of chaos from here. It think you'll dig it. True, each issue may range in tone: #4 was more quick action, while the others slowly built relationships of the characters. But I like the shift in gears form issue to issue. #5 is also pretty action packed, while #6 is a more labyrinthian journey through psychology and the underworld.

Again, thanks for the kind words.

Guest_David Mack - Aug 14, 2000 1:33 AM - 511 of 858

To Faraday in post 479:

Actually, I already the cover to SKIN DEEP #3. It curently resides with an art collector in the Caiman Islands.

To Nick:

Hey, I remember that art that you sent now! Thanks for that. I hadn't mentally connected that to you previously. I really appreciate that letter.

Speaking of the KABUKI metamorphosis Hardcover, that is what I am working on right now. It is a lot of work. I'm trying really hard to do my best designing and adding stuff to this because it is probably my most important work.

In case others don't know yet, It is a 280 page Hardcover of my recent painted Kabuki series. It has an intro by Bill Sienkewiecz and an afterword by John Sayles (yes the writer/director/filmmaker). There is a lot of other stuff too. I'm actually woried that I may be adding too much, and I might limit myself to what I include. I still want to keep the focus on the actual story and the feeling it gives you. There was another really in depth analysis of the story written by Takashi Hattori (like he did in Circle of Blood. But I'm not sure if it too much after the great stuff John and Bill pointed out. And I am considering that it may take away from the imaginations and personal meanings that the readers bring to the story themselves.

I always do this. I think I have it all nailed down and then I constantly reconsider every choice and change the design around again.

Oh well, I'll have it worked out ofter a week or two.

Response to Sith mutha:

Looking forward to the mail order that you sent! Will get it right out to you!

Guest_David Mack - Aug 14, 2000 1:51 AM - 512 of 858

Response to Nick and faraday:

Yeah, the trade for my DD stories is something that I always had in mind. I'm sure they will work out very cool. I'll mention my suggestions to Joe when we get to that point.

With the New Kabuki Hardcover, I'm sparing no expense. I have a ton of cool stuff to put in, i'm just in the middle of finding the best way to do it.

I've never put a personal bio in any of my books before. This will be the first time one of my trades has a detailed bio account of my art/work schooling/career highlights.

Response to Vigilante:

Because I was introduced to DD in the Miller run, those characters/villians are probably my favorites. The first DD issue I read was the one with the Punisher in it. I was nine years old and at first the grimness of the book and the Punisher disturbed me. But I grew to love every Miller Punisher story. I also loved the Miller Bullseye, Kingpin and Elektra. Also loved Nuke in Miller's return.

Nick & Faraday:

Thanks again for the vote of confidence in my work and characters. I promise you that if I do end up doing this ECHO series it will be something very uniqe and special.

Burn it!!! Okay, it might not have been that bad, but I know it will come back to haunt me... I'm also, if you want to get technical, the guy who mailed you an eight page story called STRAPPED quite a few years ago. I still have the letter you sent me in response to that...

JOHN SAYLES::: For those not familiar with Mr. Sayles (an amazing writer/director) here's a list of movies he's made... Men With Guns, Limbo, Hombres Armados, Lone Star, The Secret Of Roan Inish, Passion Fish, City Of Hope, Eight Men Out, Matewan, The Brother From Another Planet, Lianna, Baby It's You, Return Of The Secaucus. [I think that's complete] In addition to writing all the above, he's also written... Mimic, Men Of War, Breaking In, Wild Thing, The Clan Of The Cave Bear, Unnatural Causes, Enormous Changes, Trumps, The Challenge, The Howling, Alligator, Battle Beyond The Stars, Lady In Red, Piranha.

If you haven't seen them, everybody should see his last two films: Men With Guns and Limbo. Both are amazing films, very true to his mature style...

Guest_Faraday - Aug 14, 2000 5:20 PM - 515 of 858

Take it your a fan, of John Sayles, eh Nick? :)As for David, how long did it take you to write and read all that,......dedication in it's ultimate form :) . Right where do I start, major bummer about the skin deep cover, man I really like that , I dunno something about it really was unique. Personally I love it when the covers area close up of something, rather than a million different people doing loads of things. I like detail but on the specific subject. Dammit, I wanted that , oh well, any chance of you producing a set of prints with that included. I remember you saying something about a german portfolio you were selling,.....in Germany I guess, any chance of it being released I dunno in previews or something?

Moving on to Scarab #5, I'm really looking forward to that issue actually, it's been such a good run so far, and if I remember correctly we still haven't seen Kabuki, there's that amazing ending you've promised us (OK not promised but implied that it was something really clever and that you were excited about it, so it's bound to be an amazing ending :) ), oh yeah and we got some more Rick Mays art, can't possibly go wrong. As for issue 3, I dunno it's not that something happened (I'm not trying to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't read it) but the way you handled it was really clever, so obviously it kinda stuck a cord with me. 4 was of equal standard no doubt about that but so far issue 3 is the best.

Metamorphosis- Here's a bit of advise, actually not advise as such but more like a plea . Cram pack the book with everything. I mean everything you can, don't cut anything out. Why because you won't be able to put those things in later. Will it take away from the imagination after reading it, hard to say. When I first say the 6th Sense I thought wow, amazing. But it wasn't till I saw the DVD that I actually realised all the depth and levels the story and the acting and the props etc had. The you see all the deleted scenes it's like shesh they were really aiming for something big. And if that wasn't enough , the director comes in and gives you his thought about all kinds of things , what he was thinking when trying to inspire the composer and behind the scene things in casting the roles and how he wrote the story. He then tells you how he broke into the business and what he was trying to achieve from the start. It was very comprehensive and it made me apreciate the movie that much more, because all that stuff opened my eyes to little things I wouldn't have realised by myself simply because I wasn't thwere for the making of the thing. Obviously you should put some sort of disclaimer that kinda says, don't read the introduction don't look at the last 40 pages with all the extra stuff, just read the stuff first and then go into the extra stuff. (I'm saying not reading the intro simply because you said that Bill points a few things out ) . Metamorphosis is your 6th Sense , anywho whatever you decide I'm sure it'll be something you've thought a great deal about. One question I'm still in the deciding phase of whether I should get the Limited or regular Hardcover, what do the sketchs have to them and are they like in pockets at the back of the book?

Echo: See Joey Q said 'Well we're talking to a few creators right now,...' thanks for clarifying the creators. I suppose this'll only happen if Joe decides to do a MK year 3, snd after Rick is done with the Scarab series,....but doesn't he also have the Dirty Pair/gen13 mini to do if the pruposal goes through?

Again thanks for answering everything after such a busy schedule,....how's the Kabuki movie tugging along?

Guest_David Mack - Aug 14, 2000 6:20 PM - 516 of 858

Hey Faraday:

Speaking of that limited edition Kabuki portfolio from Germany, it was also offered in previews. There are still some left, so your retailer can reorder it. It cas 50 full color plates and comes in a delux hardcover/box embossed with the Kabuki kanji. It includes the entire art from every page of DREAMS and a lot of extra covers. ANd all of these are printed on the best paper stock and at a very large size.

Thanks for advice/opinions on the hardcover.

NickCurtis - Aug 14, 2000 7:16 PM - 517 of 858

Hello Faraday:--

(1) Yes, I am a John Sayles fan. He grew up near my home, so I was introduced to his work fairly early (or at least the whole growing up near me thing is what I was told). See LIMBO. Everyone should watch that movie once (at least)...Amazing depth.

(2) The cover to SKIN DEEP #2 was pretty intense, but there are ways to get copies... I believe it was KABUKI POSTER #2 (available from Previews STAR SYSTEM) that featured that cover and the prints available from wfcomics.com had that image as one (though I don't know if it is still in stock)...They have a massive Kabuki print collection available (and they also sell some of David's originals -- which reminds me, where's the one I ordered, David?).

(3) The DREAMS set is amazing. My copy is number 241 and I have yet to doubt the $110 expense. Go for it!

All for now,

nick curtis - nogo@bestweb.net

Tragicpsigirl - Aug 14, 2000 9:32 PM - 518 of 858

David,

I have stolen a friend's copies of your Daredevil work and the Kabuki Scarab stories (I'm new to this medium and a poor poor girl) but I have to say I am blown away by your lyrical dialogue and your art that flows like poetry ( from the bits I have seen). While everyone thinks it's weird for a girl to like comics I want to show everyone your stories to show these funny books are better than most tv shows and movies kids my age are watching. Why can't a girl like this stuff? I mean I can relate to characters like Scarab very much and just think Echo is one bad a$$ chick.

In short. You rock.

Guest_David Mack - Aug 14, 2000 11:56 PM - 519 of 858

Hey Nick:

So that was you that ordered the art page thru WFC? Cool. I think Justin recently sent the final order thru to me. I'll check with Anh and get on top of it.

Did you know that Sayles recently produced the upcoming "Girl Fight" by Karyn Kusama? WOn best of show at SUndance. I understand it is a young woman's quest to be a hardcore boxing champion.

Makes me think of my ECHO character. I'll see it asap (I think in September.

Response to tragicpsigirl:

Thanks for reading my work! I'm glad you dig my comics and want to show them to others.

If you relate to Scarab and Echo, I think you would like the Kabuki stories and would relate to her. Try Skin Deep and the recent 1-9 issues. Let me know what you think.

Dr. David/Mr. Mack:--

Yes, that was me. That's why the mailing address has my name on it. :)

I wonder why it took so long getting to you, I finialized the order several weeks ago. Hmmm. Don't feel any rush, I can wait. I'm patient.

As for GIRL FIGHT, I didn't know Sayles was producing it. Might be worth watching. Kusama...Kusama...Why does that name ring a bell?

On the ECHO/"Girl Fight" connection -- syncronicity at work, my friend, syncronicity at work....

Tragicpsigirl:--

I'm glad you encountered David's work. The man is quite brilliant at what he does. And I agree with Dr. David/Mr. Mack -- if you have been enjoying his Daredevil run and Kabuki Agents: Scarab, just wait til you see Kabuki! Kabuki is more personal (and experimental) than the Daredevil run, and David's sense of art is amazing! Rick Mays, the artist on Kabuki Agents: Scarab, does amazing stuff too, but David's style is just so personal (especially on Kabuki). Check it out.

EVERYONE'S KABUKI HOMEWORK PROJECT: Introduce Kabuki to a friend, whether they read comics or not. It works, as our own Tragicpsigirl can attest.

Thank god these boards are back, I was feeling a bit scared there that these things wouldn't get back online. Thought I'd wait till I headed over to nohtv.com since I enjoy this board for some reason,....it's like I know you guys ,...OK now group hug , group hug, ahhhhhh :)

Hey,Faraday

the same people (and more) are at the Nohtv messageboard (in case you did'nt know yet.)

Faraday:--

I also missed this board. Group hug, ohhhhh!

Mark is right, though. Most of the same people meander between the two boards. Not all the same, but there is definately a lot of crossover -- I like them each for different reasons. This one is more relaxed and slow-paced.

Guest_Faraday - Aug 19, 2000 10:09 AM - 525 of 858

Tell the truth only reason I'm not an ongoing guy over there is because I go to like 4 different message boards , adding another one to my list is getting out of hand. It takes a lot of time, and then you got the resident guys who've been there for ages so you don't know who the hell is laughing atcha and who's just like that. That's the only reason I'm not over there as often as over here , but you guys might see me popping over there :)

I know what you are saying, Faraday. I only post -- regularly -- here and at the wfcomics.com board (also known as the NohTV.com board) and they consume what little free time I currently have. But no one over there will laugh at you, as Mark pointed out. And if they do, well... um... I'll... um... I'll post a really snide responce back! Yeah!

OK I might give it a shot. Just wanted to tell you boys (of course you guys might already know this) but popping over to the www.comiccontinuum.com website you'll have have a sneak peek at the scarab # 5 issue . Must say it's really good, but can't beat that amazing cover for issue 4 really. (Yes 3 is the best for me storywise , ....so far, while 4 has the best cover period). 5 is really nice as well. Hey I've waited enough for this issue so it's bound to be brilliant ..) [did I do the mutant smile justice ]

NickCurtis - Aug 21, 2000 4:19 AM - 531 of 858

I didn't know that comiccontinuum had a Scarab 5 preview up -- thanks for the info. You did the mutant smile justice in my eyes, but since it is a creation of Dr. David/Mr. Mack you might want his opinion...

OK I'll say I told you so so that everyone who doubted it can shut up ,....in the nicest possible way . If you guys go over to comicscontinuum, you'll see that in november you'll be digging deep into your pockets for all the loose change to get all the DD books that month. Can anyone say DD #15 and 16. How about DD:Ninja #2, hey if you guys can't be bothered with any of those (Of course you can since one is written by David and the other is painted by the man) then how's about going for DD/Spider-man, got a prudy Alex Ross cover. Oh , and what's that I see on the cover to Black Widow, nah it can't be not DD again !!!!!! That's a lot of books with DD on it. Any some are painted , all are written by top writers and they'll all kick ass. Patience is a vertue. What would you rather have a line up with Scott Hampton, Alex Ross, Paul Jenkins, Phil Winslade, Richard Isanove, Rob Hanyes,Devin Grayson and Greg Rucka, Joe Quesada, Brian Micheal Bendis and of course our very own David Mack, or some hack trying to get the book on a monthly basis regardless of how good the bloody work is ? I know what I choose. Now I'm off to celebrate by Birthday , take care all and I'll tell you what manner of tom follery I got up to ..) Thanks guys, after my 3 day celebrations are finally over, I can get back to the joy of the interent. I can honestly say that this was the best bday I've ever had,....ever. Any who any news? Sorry about the small response, but I currently haven't got any fire to fuel my fire so to speak. Basically I don't get the comics in the summer till after I get back to the UK. So all the stuff I'd rant and rave about I can't do anything of the sort till september 20th ish . You guys read Pedro and Me ....any good? Did you guys check out the Hellblazer issue that got yanked off the internet? Damn good use of the comics medium. If you guys are interested I could send it your e-mails , seriously it's amazingly good.

Guest_jeff - Aug 28, 2000 12:39 AM - 543 of 858

Hi Faraday, Yeah I'd LOVE to get that Hellblazer book. I've been a huge Ellis fan ever since his Hellstorm and I have the whole Hellblazer run minus the Jenkins run which I didn't much care for. I tried to print it but i couldn't get it to fit on a reg size peice of paper because of the text and copyright info at the top of the pages. Then it was yanked. Man I would really appreacite it. Jeffreyms@juno.com Thanks! Jeff

NickCurtis - Aug 28, 2000 4:49 AM - 544 of 858

Okay, speaking of Hellblazer (and no, I didn't see this on-line comic -- if you send it, I will love you forever!): Is anyone reading the new issues? The one's written by Azzarello (100 Bullets writer)? They are amazing...

nick curtis - nogo@bestweb.net

Guest_Faraday - Aug 28, 2000 11:48 AM - 545 of 858

I'll be sending these to you two, Anh (since I don't have David's e-mail address if he wants them , I haven't used that e-mail since I ordered my books from the man :) ) and once Mark gets his a$$ together and gives me his e-mail address. And yes I'm reading the current Hellblazer run, bloody amazing stuff. Even the english dialogue is spot on. Compared to soemthing like Tomb Raider. Oh yeah and my website should be up and running in a few days. I have a Kabuki pic I've drawn , in pencil and then the inked version. I'll be computer colouring it pretty soon as well. Stay tuned :) . Just been reading Fortune and Glory, ex sent it over from the UK, pissed my sides in the first few pages, Bendis really writes some snappy dialogue. I'm assuming you've read this puppy Nick, with your background and all ? Yeah where's David by the way, do miss the guy :)?

NickCurtis - Aug 29, 2000 4:49 AM - 546 of 858

Faraday:--

(1) Love Azzarello. Love him. Read 100 BULLETS from Vertigo/DC Comics. He is the man.

(2) Can't wait to see your web site and the pic. Post here when it is up and running, if you please...

(3) FORTUNE AND GLORY. Yes, I have read it. Bought all the single issues, then the trade. Brilliant insight into the industry (movies, that is). Bendis says a sequal is in the works. Have you read GOLDFISH and JINX by Bendis? Better than his current SAM & TWITCH run, which is a tough thing to say...

hey mackdaddy,

couple of comments/questions. Love your DD stuff so far. When's the next one come out? will your next story arc as penciller be released on a regular basis? I hope so.

Guest_Faraday - Aug 29, 2000 2:28 PM - 549 of 858

Love the name, ...seriously. Just watched MTV's top 100, and in the past Smell like teen spirit has been number one for like 5 years running or something. In the year 2000 , backstreet boys are doing the song that best clasifies this generation. That totally blows big chunks. Any way just to clarify , it'll be painted, and if it doesn't come out on a regular basis then it'll be Marvel's fault. Bendis wrote this like 7 years ago and David started painting it like 8 years ago (I tend to exaggerate sometimes so sue me ). Oh yeah as for Mark, Nick and jeff it'll be send in the next couple of days.

Oh yeah David, after reading fortune and glory, I can't help but feel that maybe this Kabuki Movie might have the same fate as the Goldfish movie. Am I even close, because I was really excited when I heard that you were writing the script , but somehow I dunno it just seems like such a long shot. Any thoughts ?

NickCurtis - Aug 30, 2000 4:35 AM - 550 of 858

From what I've heard, Dr. David/Mr. Mack is mostly done with his DareDevil run as an artist -- he's painted up through number 17 and is currently working on number 18.

As for the KABUKI movie: anything can happen until it is released. If I understand correctly, they only gave Mack first treatment option -- which means he delivers a script and if they like it, they might have another work on it or they might have Mack. If they don't like it, they can just get someone else completely.

This is not for any of you comic books and I am sorry if this causes you any inconvience. However you know comic books and I am not sure who else to ask. I have a autograph Green Lantern ring. and I can not seem to find out how much it is worth. I was wondering if by any chance you would know. Or have the knowldge of where or whom I could contact to find out. Thank you for you time.

Guest_Faraday - Aug 30, 2000 9:03 AM - 553 of 858

Who excactly are you asking this question to rupunzzle ?

Nick, see that's what I'm scared of. After reading fortune and glory, this is kinda the impression I get from what'll be going on with the Kabuki movie. Man I wish it wasn't so, and it was something along the lines of Jeff Smith's bone.

Guest_Faraday - Aug 30, 2000 3:31 PM - 554 of 858

Well, if you guys haven't heard the news about Quesada being promoted to the new Editor In Chief of Marvel, go check out www.fandom.com/comics for the inside track. Personally if David is on the phone to the man, congradulate him on many fan's behalf. Creatively (I know he says he'll still be involved but I somehow doubt it ) he'll be gretaly missed. But if he can make Marvel like the MK group, comics largest company , might actually get good, really good. I guess you'll have a lot of new work lined up if you want it eh David ? :) Do you know who's taking over the MK editorial position ?

NickCurtis - Aug 31, 2000 4:15 AM - 555 of 858

I believe the pre-production art for the Kabuki film is being worked on (Dr. David/Mr. Mack -- care to clarify?), but that means nothing. Until it reaches the theatres, nothing is solid. Anyone remember the 1994 Fantastic Four movie?

Last I heard, the Quesada thing was merely a rumor. I will have to find out more...

I've got it in pencil and then in pen. Please tell me what you think . Guest_David Mack - Sep 10, 2000 12:22 AM - 561 of 858

Hey Friends,

Glad to see that you are talking with each other. I look forward to seeing the art, Faraday.

Guest_David Mack - Sep 10, 2000 12:37 AM - 562 of 858

Happy Birthday Faraday.

I'm glad some of you here are reading Fortune and Glory. I really enjoy that book. It's also sorta cool that I'm one of the characters in it and a part of some fo the stories. Bendis tells a great story.

As far as Faraday's concerns for the Kabuki Film... So far, so good. I'm learning a lot and am fascinated at each stage of the progression. I've also been able to meet and work with some amazing and talented people. I've signed a confidentiality agreement, so I'm not allowed to mention any of the details aside from what capacity that I have been employed to work on it. It has been a great experience so far.

Sometimes I can't believe how many things I am working on at once. It can seem like I have five carreers.

It's interesting that I'm painting the next DD story while the one that I wrote is in the process of being released. It will be cool when I have two DD trades, one that I wrote and one that I drew. Very curious as to haow people will react to each of these stories in thier entirety.

Guest_David Mack - Sep 10, 2000 12:43 AM - 563 of 858

In response to Kurt Cobain:

I'm glad you like my current DD story. I don't really know what week the next issue ships. As far as I know, the next storyline that you mentioned will ship regularly. I'm actually painting (doing the complete art on it) not just penciling. The cool thing is Quesada will also be drawing a couple pages of each issue that represent a different "state" of what is happening with one of the characters. It is an interesting story with a range of schizofrenic art styles.

Guest_David Mack - Sep 10, 2000 12:52 AM - 564 of 858

I'm very happy for Joe Quesada. I think that it is great that he is the new Editor-in-Chief at Marvel. Very Cool. I think Marvel Knights was a great proving ground for his skills and I'm glad his is given the chance to put the same caliber of creators on all of the Marvel books.

Also wanted every one to know that the only other convention/signing that I have scheduled for this year is the Mid-Ohio-Con in November. It is in Columbus, Ohio the Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving (as always).

This is a very fun and friendly show. I will have a table next to Bendis as usual. Also Andy Lee will be there. Will have all the Kabuki books, prints, original art, shirts, etc.

Hope you can make it.

I also want to remind you that the new Previews catalogue has a full page solicitation for Kabuki Agents: Scarab #5. It ships in November but you need to ask your retailer to order it now from the current Previews catalogue.

Back I go to paint Daredevil.

Guest_Faraday - Sep 11, 2000 2:05 PM - 565 of 858

Good to hear from you again David. Regarding the two trades, it's a pretty unique and rare combination, so I suppose the only way to feel is pretty damn proud, and you deserve it completely. I was recently talking with my old retailer and asked him what he thought of the current DD story. He replied 'Absolutely stunning,.....but I don't read it' 'Eh?' Well he continued, it's not so much I don't like the creators but the character doesn't do it for me, he's too goody goody. 'So how the hell can you tell it's amazing?' ' Simple, when 954 people out of 957 people come in and rant and rave about it being the ultimate book that Marvel Publishes and that it's a masterpiece something has to be right there.' So there you have it, my retailer has got some crazy ideas :) Can't wait for the next issue of Scarab, really looking forward to that. I also checked out the artwork Rick did for his pruposed Spider-Woman sries and thought that was really good. Damn near misses.

Guest_David Mack - Sep 11, 2000 3:30 PM - 566 of 858

Hi Faraday,

Give my regards to your retailer friend. It's good to hear that kind of feedback.

Glad you saw Rick's Spider Woman designs from way back (95 I think). If anyone else wants to see them I think they are up at Bendis' Jinkworld site. www.Jinxworld.com

As far as near misses, there are a ton of interesting ones. My favorite personal one was a Marvel Knights project that fell through over a year ago. The project was to involve Me, Bendis, Bill Sienkewiecz, and Jim Steranko all colaborating on a new Nick Fury Agent of Shield. It was a big secret for a while, but I guess I can mention it now cause Bendis mentioned it on his Message board. At the time it was pretty exciting. Bendis, SIenkewiecz and I had a cool meeting about it at a San Diego Con. Then we met with Steranko to discuss his involvement.

Since then there have been a ton of other possibilities on the back burner. It will be interesting to see which ones remain there and which ones make it to the finished project. Most of it just concerns fitting things in to the creator's schedule (mine specifically).

I'm looking forward to showcasing a lot of Rick's other designes and styles in the Scarab Artbook as soon as I get a chance to put it together. His sketchbooks and original canvas paintings are amazing. I'm going to fit it all in the book.

Droideka - Sep 12, 2000 12:17 AM - 567 of 858

That Nick Fury thing sounded damn cool.

Did you really go back to paint Daredevil?

Looking forward to Metamorhosis.

NickCurtis - Sep 12, 2000 4:26 AM - 568 of 858

With the recent regrowing interest in Nick Fury, I'm surprised something like the book you mentioned hasn't been pushed through. Alas. Good luck on all endevours Dr. David/Mr. Mack...

Any news yet on the preliminary contents of the DD trades? (aside from the issues, of course)

Droideka!

Hello again. Yes I really did continue painting DD after that post and continuously since. Hee Hee. Now I'm going to do it again.

Nick, I'll keep you posted when we discuss the trades and format.

Bye people.

Guest_Faraday - Sep 13, 2000 5:15 PM - 570 of 858

I've got to ask one question that's really been bugging me , ever since this summer I decided to really get my ass and draw. Problem is I'm really slow. Not because I take loads of time but I draw something and then I spend the next 2 hours deciding whether or not I like it and then another 10 minutes work and again to see whether I like ti etc. So my question is how exactly do you motivate yourslef to sit down for hours and just get it all done. I can do it with my studies but for some bizzare reason this cannot be accomplished for something I really enjoy and miss.

Spence - Sep 13, 2000 9:01 PM - 571 of 858

Grerat work on your DD stuff, David. Personally, I'd put it in the same class as Frank Miller's work, which is saying a lot. What's going on with the issues? Quesada's been taking on too much work? I think that the poor releasing of the book has hurt its sales. I work in a comic book store, so I know what I'm talking about. I'm glad that it isn't being rushed out, but obviously Quesada needs to either quit some other commitments or finish this story-arc and pass on the penciling duties of DD to someone else. I know that sounds harsh, but DD has been seriously plagued by missed deadlines. You seem to have been holding up your end, so this is no reflection on you. I just see customers that were once excited about DD and talking about it. Now nobody seems to mention it anymore. Which isn't to say that they won't buy the next issue, but it's diminishing the once high excitement around the book. It's getting more and more difficult to remember what happened in the last issue. Sorry for the rant, but that's what the retail end of things has to deal with. Great job sticking with your commitment to the comics industry. Keep up the great work!

Guest_David Mack - Sep 14, 2000 12:11 AM - 572 of 858

Hey Faraday:

I know what you are talking about. I find that it is best to do the drawing, and then move on to the next one, and then the next one, and then come back and reconsider if they work or not after I've finished others and am in a more objective frame of mind. Usually I can look at them two days later and instantly see what they need to make them work. Sometimes it is just a waste of time to try to figure that out before starting the next page.

A fresh perspective can do wonders.

Guest_David Mack - Sep 14, 2000 12:25 AM - 573 of 858

Hey Spence,

Thanks for the kind words about my Daredevil work.

As far as the shipping schedule... certainly, no one likes to see the new issue come out more than I do, but it is out of my hands. I totally understand where you are coming from but I can't really speak for Marvel or anyone there.

I can say it has been a pleasure working with Marvel Knights. As you Know Joe Quesada has become Marvel's new Editor-in-Chief. He has a ton of duties. But it is important to both of us that he finish the artwork for this storyline rather than having a fill-in finish it.

And as you said, he has hired a new artist to do the next storyline. In case you don't know, the artist for the next storyline is me. I'm painting a four issue DD story (issues 16-190 with my friend Bendis scripting it.

I completely empathize with your point of view. I understand how this affects your situation on the retail level. I appreciate your support of my work on DD. And want you to know I'm doing the best job I can on the artwork for the next DD story. I'm also trying to have the whole thing done by the time Joe finishes his, so they can put the next story line out very frequently and regularly (which of course is Joe's intent on having me do the art for the next story).

Droideka - Sep 14, 2000 12:31 AM - 574 of 858

16-190 If only !!

Guest_David Mack - Sep 14, 2000 3:15 AM - 575 of 858

Ha! I'd go insane (at least more so). 16-190

really means (16-19)!!!! I'm only painting four issues, not 175.

Thanks Droideka.

Droideka - Sep 14, 2000 10:51 PM - 577 of 858

Dave,

Do you have more fun creating stories for your own characters or for existing characters, like Daredevil?

Who or what are your influences? What did you grow up reading (comic book wise)?

Who are your favourite comic book super-heroes and of them which would you most like to write/draw?

Of the current comic book selection, what titles do you read? Is there one you never miss?

Another thing, what is your favourite film and do you recommend any?

thanks thanks thanks !!! Droid

Guest_Faraday - Sep 15, 2000 4:00 AM - 578 of 858

Deary me forgot to thank you Dave for the Advive I'll be implementing it today and tommorow as I'm on a deadline of sorts ;)

Guest_~Adam - Sep 16, 2000 6:02 PM - 579 of 858

Hey, I havn't posted on here in a long, long time but I had to comment...

David, this is the first I had heard about that Nick Fury project. Now that you mention, I remember hyping something that you and him were writing, and was going to be illustrated by some other amazing artist..Sienkiewicz and Steranko....wow that would have been beyond amazing.

Can I ask why it fell through?

and on another note, is the Scarab artbook still scheduled to ship in Nov? I'm anxious to see it, and I'm sure Ryan Graff is anxious to have his cover work published! (Nice guy, I talked to him about a week ago)

~Adam

NickCurtis - Sep 17, 2000 5:10 AM - 580 of 858

Hey ~Adam:--

The SCARAB ARTBOOK, unfortunately, was cancelled. Dr. David/Mr. Mack mentioned his hopes of piecing it together for resolicitation next year. Tell Graff that I think he's done some amazing things with the Kabuki characters -- his designs are outstanding!!!

Guest_Faraday - Sep 17, 2000 1:49 PM - 581 of 858

Ballacks . Sorry been reading Garth Ennis and John Mcreas's DICKS and some of the lingo is rubbing off. Sure hope the scarab book comes out soon (not the regular one we know that'll be in our laps soon, ) but more the artbook. And while we're on the subject who do you think should be the next artist to tackle Siamese or Tigerlily. I'd obviously love for Rick to be back but he's thinking about doing the Dirty Pair/ Gen13 crossover so that won't be happening for ages, soooooo, lets have some other guys that could tackle the NOH operatives and really kick some ass, much in the same MR.Mays has done so well

NickCurtis - Sep 18, 2000 4:19 AM - 582 of 858

The style of the character deems which artist would be best. Siamese is about duality and ambiguity, thus I think Bill Sienkiewicz, Jon J Muth, or Kent Williams would be perfect. Tigerlily is sleek and subtle, so I'd go with someone like Adam Warren or Mike Avon Oeming.

nick curtis - nogo@bestweb.net

PS Dr. David/Mr. Mack: How go the talks with J Muth, by the way?

Spence - Sep 21, 2000 8:48 PM - 583 of 858

Thanks for the reply David. I thought Joe Quesada was penciling part of the story that you are illustrating? And that he was going to continue penciling DD after your run? I guess that I'm just frustrated because I have LOVED your storyline so much (telling customers that it compares favorably to any of Miller's work), yet not being able to see any new issues. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see Joe Quesada leave Daredevil. I hate it when a series changes artists mid-story. I don't think people realize how badly the pacing, mood, and overall feel of the book changes with a new artist. It'd totally ruin a trade paperback collection. Anyway, before I turn this into a Joe Quesada debate, I have to say that your Kabuki work is the greatest. In fact, I just made a display in our store today of your Kabuki trades. I'm just wondering, are you planning on ending the Kabuki storyline anytime soon? As much as I love your Kabuki stuff, I wonder what other kinds of ideas you have roaming around in your mind. (From looking at your DD stuff, I'd say that there would be a lot to look forward to!!) Take care, and thank you for not only maintaining a strong commitment to the comics medium, but pushing the envelope further in regards to what comics can be. Take care.

NickCurtis - Sep 23, 2000 5:04 AM - 584 of 858

Spence:--

Dr. David/Mr. Mack doesn't need to end the Kabuki storyline to be able to endulge his other ideas. Look at DareDevil. I think Kabuki is around for the long haul, a very personal creation of David's that he would have problems giving up. It might go on break now and again, just so he can play with another toybox, but he will always return. Maybe that's a mistaken view, but it is how I see it...

David... why not 175 issues? :D you have my vote

What's your take on mighty Joe Q. getting a new job? He's the big boss now... (sorry if you answered this before... my brain can't take reading 500++ posts)

You're a comic god! seriously... love your work

Guest_Faraday - Sep 25, 2000 2:47 AM - 586 of 858

Yeah but Nick didn't David say I dunno some where on these boards or in an interview that like all Human Beings Kabuki will eventually die and that there is an ending. Not soon mund you and 175 is a damn good number :) but it will end eventually. Like all good things. Alan Moore's Wildcats run, Sandman, Divine Right, Watchmen, Inhumans , David's Daredevil run(S), etc. That's what makes them into classics, they're structured like real stories with a begining middle and end .

NickCurtis - Sep 25, 2000 3:56 AM - 587 of 858

Salutations Faraday:--

While I can't remember a single mention of Kabuki's inevitable end from David, the tale of Kabuki proper should have a definative ending. But the comic Kabuki is about more than just one person -- it is about a world and, more specifically, the Noh. Via projects like Kabuki Agents this one tale will never actually end.

That's my belief and point.

Hey there! SOme QUICK responses!

To Droideka in 577:

Ultimately nothing compares to the satisfaction of writing my own characters, but working on DD is a great challenge in terms of approaching the character with respect for all that previous creators have brought to the character while simultaneously trying to bring something to it that only I could.

It is two different kinds of satisfaction. Just like some times it is great to work completely alone, and sometimes it is great to collaborate. They each have their challenges and rewards. I like to go back an forth between both ways of working. It keeps me energized.

I did read Frank Millers Daredevil when I was younger. So it did have an influence on me and it is amazing to think that I am now writing and drawing a book that I grew up on.

Of the current books out there, the one I never miss is Powers. It is just plain fun. I've been friends with Mike Oeming and Bendis for YEARS. Like over eight years. So it is great to see them working on something together and it really clicks for me.

Besides that, I usually pick up and try anything by some of my favorite creators. My faves are the ones that create form their own unique POV. They are bringing their own back graound and quirks into their comic work.

Hey Faraday, You are welcome and I Hope the advice helped.

Hi Adam:

THe Scarab Artbook will come out, but I haven't nailed down the month yet. I have all the art, but I have to personally put it together and I've been overwhelmed with deadlines as of late. I will certainly post here when I know the exact month. I am glad you are looking forward to it. You are going to love it. I'm showcasing sides of Rick Mays that people have never seen before: Oil paintings, layouts, sketchbooks, Manga, cel paintings, and some real fine arty stuff. You'd never guess that he is capable of so many mediums and styles.

Guest_David Mack - Sep 26, 2000 9:30 PM - 591 of 858

Hey Spence,

Thanks for the kind words. While I do intend to do more Kabuki stories, there are also many other creator owned stories that I have written and have not yet had the time to draw. I am really looking forward to working on these.

Nick and Faraday, Thanks for the good points. Yeah that is pretty much the way I see it too.

Thanks Morph! I'm very happy for Quesada. Spoke to him a couple of times today. He is really trying to do some good things at Marvel.

Hi Morpheus! Can I draw your girlfriend in Kabuki? I can't make any promises, but you are welcome to send photos in case the opertunity presents itself. Either way, I thank you both for reading.

I occassionally refer to David as such instead of Dr. David/Mr. Mack. I like the ring to Dr. David/Mr. Mack thought. Kind of a Jekyll&Hyde thing about his artwork and writing. I did steal the phrase though... Now it is up to you folks to figure out where!!! I'll merely confirm or deny answers.

Dammit went back a week or so. October man , october. Anyways in case people haven't already heard well Dave Ross will be assisting Mr. Q on the remainder of his issues at the DD central . He's apparently finished off the first half of issue 14 but still has to do the layouts for the rest of that #15 book. Pretty lame if you ask me. I have no doubt that the man is completely over worked and being EIC is a very taxing job that most all of us couldn't dream of being in charge of but it just seems a bit lame that he couldn't finish off he DD run with two issues to go and nobody would have said boo to him. I love Joe Q will most bdefinietly miss the old dog on the DD but at the very least I think the man should have gone out with a bang , not a slow fizzle. Just for like consistancy value if nothing else. Ahh anyway I guess that's the way it goes sometimes. Should've got the Mack to finish it off,.....uhm no wait he's already doing like 17 jobs at once. Dave Ross ? Never seen any of his work. Must be pretty good to land that.

Guest_BobLordofEvil - Oct 11, 2000 8:28 AM - 606 of 858

Hey, Mr Mack

I'm that wacky and crazy kid who was in your hotel in San Diego who forcibly made you read his comic.

How yah doin?

Anyway, I was just wondering if you're looking for a scrappy youngster to berate and teach to become a comic God, ala Alan Moore to Neil Gaiman, Denny O'Neil to Devin K Grayson and Frank Miller to Frank Miller.

So if you could find it in your cursed black heart to be my whipping master, I'd be happy to be whipped.

Love and squiggles, Bob, Lord of Evil

NickCurtis - Oct 12, 2000 4:24 AM - 607 of 858

Hello Bob:--

This is something Dr. David/Mr. Mack has tackled in the past and, typically, he tries to help all who correspond with him -- but understand that his comic comes first, thus his time is limited. If Mack's views have changed from this, I'm sure he'll post, but this is the reply he's basically given in the past.

Plus, you forgot one important one: Mike to Mack.

Guest_Bob, Lord of Evil - Oct 13, 2000 7:09 AM - 608 of 858

Sounds good enough.

I really doubted that the man would have any time to do this anyway being so busy and all with writing funny books, but I figured it was worth a shot to be sure. The man's brilliant, and he tends to do what I do (have little action, but when it occurs it's important), and he's sexy as hell and.... What? A man can call another man sexy and not be gay, right? Not that there's anything wrong with bein.... Shut up man.

Anyway, heres to you David Mack and your insane clown possee of clowns.

Bob, Lord of Evil

oh, wow. how often does mr.Mack appear? he must be awfully busy. i don't really have any specific question to ask him, 'cause i'm only here to praise. ^___^ all hail the one and only. *bowbow* well, since i'm here, :p about the Scarab series. hot like molten lava! o____o inking is sooooo beautiful. will Kabuki have a boyfriend? or is she too busy fighting the bad guys off? :x she can dream sometimes about that stuff, right? :D well, in your circle of blood, Kabuki seems quite old, maybe 20ish, but after that in your colored issues, she looks like 16-17. am i missing something? what gives?

NickCurtis - Oct 15, 2000 4:26 AM - 612 of 858

Raven:--

Dr. David/Mr. Mack shows his face on a regular basis -- depending on how busy he is. He hasn't been around in a week (approximately), so he's due for a drop by. :)

As for Kabuki's age, that is debatable. She "technically" died at age nine, so she probably is in her late teens/early twenties. Another question for the KABUKI DATA FOLDER to answer (when is that coming out again?)... :P

Guest_Khaled - Oct 16, 2000 5:08 AM - 613 of 858

Actually I think it's time for me divulge my name it's something I've wanted to do ages and ages ago but I didn't . Basically ages ago David guessed where Faraday came from. I'm an electrical engineer doing my masters now and at the time I was doing an electro mag course, whic for all those in the know , know it's probably the hardest thing any one can take at Uni. Our Prof was plucking equations outta his ass and we had to develop the skill to do the same. Guess who was kinda instrumental to this field,....Faraday. I had this guy on my mind and so I thought an homage would be fun , but I guess I'll stop the sadness and start putting my real name for good measure, eh. Hello everyone I'm Khaled, pleased ta meetcha. Oh yeah and noticed SCARAB #6 is out for a Jan release,......no offense but , David are you sure about this ? I mean that's like bi-monthly kinda. We get 5 soonish and in January we get 6. I'm loving it and Rick has done an amazing little cover there so I suppose kuddos. Does this mean you'll have the rest of the issues out by April and finally have Scarab in the bag ? What about the scrap book ? Any news about the Sicle prop ? I'm well excited about that puppy .

Paxi - Oct 16, 2000 11:13 AM - 614 of 858

Sorry Nick but it was getting a tad bit over the top , everyone going by their real name and me with a psuedonym , like I have something to hide,......well I do have loads to hide but nothing ,.......I'd better keep my mouth shut. In good news Metamorphosis is coming out soon ain't it ? Extra 2000 pages or something I hear,....new cover,...hell it's got variants on the inside,........I'm not sure about any gimmicks,.....any holograms attached to the back if you collect coupons and send them in? Didn't Mack say he'll be giving people a date with the Kabuki Model he commissioned last year for anyone who comes up with a way to sell more Kabuki stuff ......I'm sure I heard that somewhere,.......solicitation for Metamorphosis , maybe ? And you wonder where all the visous rumors come from :) Can't wait for the extra pages actually.

METAMORPHOSIS might have been postponed until November 1st, which is the street date for SCARAB #5 also. Ohhh.

i'll have to join Paxi in that one Mr. Mack. my friend just formed a band and he wants me to come up with some lyrics for him, since he wants that "x-japan" feel in it. heh. :) Kabuki's so poetic, and i'd like to know too if making references would be a'ight.

Guest_Gandalf - Oct 22, 2000 12:28 PM - 620 of 858

David- Do you plan on working on Daredevil after your storyline with Brian Bendis?

Guest_Ron Wm McElman - Oct 24, 2000 5:59 PM - 621 of 858

For Raven & Nick:

David used to get asked a lot how old Kabuki was, so I asked him in an interview I did with him a while back. Here was his response:

I'm probably not ever going to give a definite year that the current series takes place in. I enjoy it happening in the "ambiguous near future." That could mean tomorrow or 20 years from now. The story is more timeless and accessible this way. However, for our purposes I can give you an easy way to estimate Kabuki's age.

We know that Kabuki's mother, Tsukiko, was Ainu and that Ainu women get their face and arm tattoos when they reach puberty. So Tsukiko was taken by the soldier before that age, as was the common practice with abducting girls to be comfort women. In fact in issue #1 of the Image series, Kabuki tells the Doctor that "…my mother was only ten years old when the soldier took her away." For practical purposes we can estimate that Tsukiko was abducted in 1945-giving her less than a year (since the Japanese surrendered on September 2, maybe Tsukiko could have been at the camp for 9 months-the same amount of time that Kabuki was in the institution and in her mother's womb. A symbol of rebirth) to be in the camp with Kai and the General.

After the war was over, the General adopted the young girl as his ward. As there is little social acceptance for her outside his home, she probably lived most of her life performing servile duties in his home. By the time the General is too old to care for the social mores of a man in his position, he acknowledges that they have grown to love each other and asks her to marry him. This marriage plan, her attack by Kai and her birth of kabuki could happen anywhere between 1975-1985.

IF Kabuki is a dragon on the Chinese zodiac, she would be born in either 1976 or 1988. For our purposes we could estimate Kabuki's birth at 1980- we can guesstimate that the Circle of Blood story takes place in 2005. Which would make Kabuki 25 years old, depending on what year she is born and what year the story takes place she could range from early twenties to late twenties. The General probably had her records including birth certificate and birth date destroyed. But 25 is a reasonable estimated age for our purposes.

Hope that's helpfull,

Ron

Guest_Khaled - Oct 25, 2000 2:25 AM - 622 of 858

Thanks for that, never actually thought of scrutinising it much like that, although I probably wouldn't have thought about the year of the dragon reference probably, thanks Ron

Scarab #5 ships first week in November. The new Previews catalogue came out today and has the cover art and solicitation add for Scarab #6.

Rick's cover looks great.

I'm working on Daredevil #18 now. I've completely finished painting the art for Daredevil #16 and #17. I think they resolicited #16 in the recent Previews catalogue.

I'm very happy with how the new DD art has turned out. ANd my pal Bendis has done a very unique script.

Thanks for reading. I'm sure that your practice and ambition will teach you much. Nothing takes the place of just immersion yourself in the work and solving a lot of problems on your own. Then as they say,(and it is true from my experience) when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

Hi Raven,

Thanks for the kind words. Glad you like the new Scarab series. Boy friends in Scarab? Um... sort of. I think you will like #6. And them more boyfriend type stuff in #8. I'm really looking forward to how pwople will react to the conclusion of this Scarab story. Rick and I will do more Scarab stories in the future, but this one is sort of an origen bookend story.

As for Kabuki's age, I thank Ron for posting my interview response. I hope it helps.

Hi Khaled,

It's good to see that you've come out of the closet. Yeah I remember us speaking about the Michael Faraday reference several posts back. Interesting posts if anyone wants to go back and look.

Yes Scarab #6 comes out on January. It is in the new Previews catalogue.

That should be the month that my Daredevil painted issues start to come out.

Wow, when DD starts coming our monthly again, people won't know what to think.

TO Paxi and Raven,

As far as bands putting Kabuki references in thier music, It is very flattering when it is them sort of giving props or acknowledge my work. It might be a different thing if they based thier marketing of the song around the idea of Kabuki. But some cool references is appreciated.

I heard the Atlanta Rap group GOODY MOB mentioned Kabuki in a rap on thier new album.

Geoff Keezer's new Jazz album has a song called WILD CARD that is a reference to AKEMI. I put the artwork to this album in Reflections #3.

My friend Andy Lee is in a band in Atlanta and I visit there a lot and go to their live gigs. We were at a club called KARMA and some people invited us to the VIP room and I met Chili from TLC there. She was really cool and nice.

Guest_David Mack - Oct 26, 2000 12:14 AM - 630 of 858

Hey Khaled,

Thanks for mentioning the Metamorphosis hardcover.I just recieved the Blueline of it from the printer today.

I'm pretty happy with all the pages that I devoted to the design and pacing of the book. I actually had to include an extra 8 more pages than I advertised it with. Now it is 288 pages. Though there is a cool, intro by Bill Sienkiewicz and an insightful afterword by (Oscar wining filmmaker) John Sayles, most of the pages are for the design atmosphere, intro art, and so the pacing and cover gallery between chapters lets the book breathe and read at the right melody. This was more important to me than just filling it with a sketchbook. Also I'm very happy with the dustjacket art. And most importantly, it is just cool for me to have the whole nine issue story in one big hardcover format. The story reads so much better this way.

Also it occured to me that in all the previous books, that I had never put a bio or "about the author" kind of thing. So the hardcover includes a bio and author info that includes some background and info to frequently asked questions.

Guest_David Mack - Oct 26, 2000 12:20 AM - 631 of 858

TO Gandolf,

"Do I plan on working on Daredevil after my storyline with Bendis in #19"

Good Question.

I'd at least like to continue painting all the covers. I know there is a Bob Gale storyline sometime. I would still like to continue painting the covers during that. After that I'd be interested in writing more Daredevil.

Droideka - Oct 26, 2000 1:27 AM - 632 of 858

Excellent.

Sorry to douse your hopes, but I'm Australian. And Dave, we all love you down here.

Guest_David Mack - Oct 26, 2000 12:28 PM - 633 of 858

Droideka,

It's no dousing, I assure you. Sorry for making the assumption. I love Australian accents too!:)

I get a lot of mail from Australia. It would be cool to do a signing there sometime. Do they have many conventions, etc.?

Droideka - Oct 27, 2000 3:09 AM - 634 of 858

No. There was something closely resembling a convention earlier this year in Sydney, but no mainstream creators (or publishers) were there.

You could put in a good word, eh?

So, you're friends with Paul Jenkins? Damn it man, you two have to collaborate!

Thanks.

Guest_David Mack - Oct 27, 2000 3:37 AM - 635 of 858

I'm pals with Ashley Wood also, who happens to be from Australia.

I'm sure someday I'd be happy to collaborate with both of them.

Guest_Khaled - Oct 27, 2000 5:27 AM - 636 of 858

Ashley is pretty damn cool, weird but damn cool,.....I'm talking about his work not him, I've never met the man, but I'm sure he's brilliant. Paul, well I'm not so sure what to make of the main man. Inhumans was the best thing to come out last year , and Paul played a huge part in that his side of things were masterfully taken. I have benn enjoying the Sentry but no where near Inhumans. Hulk, well not really my cup of tea, and as for Witchblade , well I'm hoping he can save that puppy from complete and utter annialation. I must say that I'm really loving Powers , what did you'all think of #6 ? Wierd thing is my store didn't get a few books. Metamorphosis was one of them so I'm pretty annoyed about that , and I really wanted the Torso hardcover. If you're looking for some great reading then check out the nwly released witching hour hardcover,....very nice stuff :) Only 1 week for Scarab #5 , and here's hoping we get some Daredevil soon. Anyone reading Saga of the Metabarons ? What about Promethea? Hell anything Moore touches . Oh yeah just read the Valentino release and he said something about a remastered version of Dreams that would include a few extras, David , care to elaborate ?

Guest_David Mack - Oct 30, 2000 2:52 AM - 637 of 858

A follow up to that post about Kabuki reference in modern popular music:

A friend of mine in Atlanta called and said they just saw an interview with the popular Rap group Outkast and that they mentioned in the interview that they enjoyed Kabuki. My friend said that they then showed a video which depicted a visual Kabuki reference.

If anyone else knows about this, fill me in on the details. I'd like to check it out.

Guest_David Mack - Oct 30, 2000 2:55 PM - 638 of 858

Kabuki Agents: SCARAB #5 hits stores this week.

Continues right where #4 left off. Also recaps a bit what has occured in the previous issues so new readers will know what is going on when things hit the fan this issue.

Guest_Gandalf - Nov 3, 2000 2:44 PM - 639 of 858

David- Thanks for the answer. I read that you were doing one of the stories in the Ultimate Marvel Team-Ups title. Do you have any idea which character you will be doing? Thanks, and I love your artwork!

Gandalf.

Guest_David Mack - Nov 3, 2000 3:03 PM - 640 of 858

Hi Gandalf,

Brian Bendis did ask me to do a team up story with him. Most likely I will do it in Collaberation with Rick Mays. There are lots of possibilies and we haven't totaly decided, but I have spoken to Rick about him Drawing a Master of Kung Fu series that I may possibly write. So Brian and I mentioned a possibility of doing that in Team up as well, with me doing layouts and storytelling and Rick drawing it.

Still there are some other possibilities and other ways I could implement the art for them.

What character would all of you as readers like to see Brian and I collaberate on in Team up? Maybe you have some suggestions that have not occured to me.

Guest_Gandalf - Nov 4, 2000 9:16 AM - 641 of 858

Thanks David sounds cool. You probably thought someone would of asked for a story with DD (maybe the Kingpin)? Another cool character would be Black Widow. I know you'r a Frank Miller fan. Do you plan on picking up his DD Visionaries that come out Soon? Thanks. Gandalf.

Droideka - Nov 6, 2000 10:11 PM - 642 of 858

Namor the Sub-Mariner ...please

Guest_LD= - Nov 7, 2000 10:22 PM - 643 of 858

ok Kabuki Scarab #5 rules. David how do you do it? think you can pass some of that talent my way? I love the last page. and I love the art throughout the whole series. tell Rick Mays he is now officially my favorite artist. The cover to #2 and #5 convinced me! I want his art now :)

And as for what characters... I mean Bendis and Mack, you guys could sell anything. you could sell anything to me at least :) and with Rick Mays going art... I'd like to see something darker though. I'd love to see you do X-Men, maybe a 3 issue thing or something focused on one character or so... something that will explain more about the characters rather than an all action based story. Personally I'd like a bigger insight into Rogue and Remy but then what are the chances? So I guess I will second the Namor vote (simply because I doubt X-Men will happen) but I'm hoping for a Mack/ Mays X-Men pin up. Go talk to that Joe Q. guy and tell him I sent you :)

Seriously though, David you're the man! LD=

Droideka - Nov 9, 2000 12:50 AM - 644 of 858

Wow, I thought I'd be alone on the Namor thing. Cool.

LD - Nov 9, 2000 2:51 PM - 645 of 858

Nope... I kind of like Namor. Jae Lee did an awesome job with him (both in the series and Inhumans) so a David Mack version would be great to see too! :)

Reminding everyone that I will be at Mid Ohio con in Colombus this month (Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving).

I will have a table next to Brian Bendis, Mike Oeming and Andy Lee. If you keep it a secret, I may be able to give you just a little peak at copies my artwork from the new Daredevil story with Bendis. SSHHHH.

As usual, I will be signing at my table the entire time (except for when I have to speak at one or to convention panels or take a lunch break). I will have a vast selection of Kabuki prints available, Original art (including a lot of the Scarab pages), Kabuki Action figures, busts, posters, t-shirts, Back issues, trades and hardcovers. The printer promises that I will have the Metamorphosis hardcover at the show.

If anyone wants me to bring the 48 page German edition Kabuki portfolio, ask ahead of time. These things weigh ten pounds each, and I will only bring what people pre-request. They sell for $120 and are 48 poster size prints of the best quality and production value. It is the story artwork from "Dreams" in addition to assorted cover art, and it all comes in a big canvas hardcover case with the Kabuki Kanji embossed on the cover.

Also please request early if you are looking for any of the foreign language Kabuki issues.

I will be happy to sign anything that you buy from my table (Anh will be there to assist you) and I will sign any of my work that you bring. Come say hello. No need to be shy. I have not limit on how many books I will sign for you. You can bring your entire Kabuki collection if you so desire. I'm very appreciative that you have it and read it.

I hope you can make it to the show. Let me know if there are any other questions about the show.

Oh, I will also be able to have the Kabuki one half at the convention for the first time. Will have other rare books too, like the Fan edition, the Gallery(get Oeming and Bendis to Sign it). I should really emphasize how great it is to have Bendis, Oeming and Andy Lee at this show. Andy has a ton of huge chinese type paintings and does requests right there in front of your eyes as if it is some kind of messy performance art. His table is a sight to behold. I think Oeming does sketches too and all these lads are very outgoing friendly people.

See you there,

David

Dear Mr. Mack,

If I were going to stage a Kabuki play, what sort of inexpensive materials would I use for costumes and what sort of inexpensive materials should I use for makeup?

tripleh - Nov 21, 2000 12:47 AM - 655 of 858

Dear Mr. Mack,

David, I was curious what a normal work week for you is? Like, how many hours in the day do you draw, how much time for other in put in for each book you do, answering letters, working with Joe, Brian or Rick? No one has seem to ask you these question, so I wanted to know. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Have fun in Ohio David.

VERY informative and detailed.

Goatman - Nov 22, 2000 8:45 AM - 661 of 858

Man, that site is pretty. I even got me some wallpaper from you. Very thoughtful.

Question: (hope its not redundant, but after 600 posts it's hard to tell)

Do you have much of a fan following in Japan or Asia with Kabuki? I know here in Japan, American Comics aren't very popular, but I know of at least one comic store in Shibuya that carries your stuff, or at least did the last time I was there. It was a tiny little place, but it's the only American comic shop I've ever seen in Japan.

Goatman - Nov 22, 2000 8:46 AM - 662 of 858

Kind of a second part to the above question, do you ever release any of your stuff translated into Japanese?

Just saw the new nohtv.com site. Like the improvements. congrats on Joe and Nanci.

Below a copy of what I posted on the WFCOMICS message board upon returning from the MID-OHIO con:

: This was probably my favorite year there. GREAT show.

: They moved the con to the HILTON which is very classy. : Much better venue which I'm told is to be the place : from now on.

: MID-OHIO Con and Roger Price was really great to us. They : totally took care of us. They set me, Bendis, Oeming, : and Andy lee together filling up one wall space of our : own. THe four of us had a blast together and there was : a real synergy between all of our fans. A fan from one : of us, soon became a fan of each of us after visiting : our collective tables.

: It was great to hang out with these good friends again : and our good pal Paul Jenkins graced us with his : presence and unique British demeanor.

: Justin of WFCOMICS was there and did a great job.

: Also thanks to the Sequential Tarts for hosting some : great panel discussions. I did two panels. One with : Oeming, Jenkins, Andy Lee, Chris Sprouse and Angel : Medina. THese guys were all great and so was the : audience. Good questions.

: And for the first time I did a solo panel. I usually : don't do many panels at cons, as I like to talk to : readers at my table. But these panels were very well : organized, classy and packed with people. Thanks TONY. : So I think I will do more of Mid Ohio's panels in the : future. THis one was called SPOTLIGHT ON DAVID MACK. : So lucky for me the whole audience actually showed up. : The whole thing was quite enjoyable and everyone asked : great questions.

: I met a lot of people from the message boards. Mine and : Bendis'.

: Jim Burdo from this board was there. Jeff peterson, : Trick, Denny Haynes, John G and more. : Probably most memorable, and most visible was Jessica : from this board who had previously posted a pic of her : Kabuki Tattoo. She has a stunning very well designed : and executed FULL SIZE Noh Tat on her back and wore an : outfit that completely displayed the tat. Very : impressive.

: I also want to thank the people that showed me the 2d and : 3d Kabuki art that they have made for colledge : classes. Met a lot of art students and this was very : cool and flattering.

: I have to thank the Laughing Ogre comic store for taking : all of us out to dinner and for all the support of our : work in the store.

: The guys that do Sketch Magazine and Blue line art : products were there as well as a ton of other great : artists and professionals. Steve Lieber of White out : was across from us. Eddy Newel, Daryl Banks, and a lot : of the other Mid Ohio regualars. If you get the chance : to do this con next year you should. I go every year : and it is a great classy and relaxed vibe at this con.

: Happy people reacted so well to the Metamorphosis : Hardcover that I had on display and that people really : seemed to respond so well to the new Dardevil art that : I had at the table.

: Thanks a lot for coming.

Response to TRiple H in post 655:

It is sort of a precarious balancing act. I pretty much spend the whole waking day working. I prefer this to be on either painting or writing, but sometimes I do have to take care of the business and comunications stuff. I sort of adopt a different sleeping, eating and excercise schedule every two weeks, to accomodate and get the most out of the shift into a different kind of work: from writing to drawing to painting to lettering. I usually catch up on my writing when I am traveling. I do a lot of my writing on the plane, bus, train, car. That way I have more time for the painting when I am at home. It is more difficult to draw on the plane, though I've done it a few times. But I try to reserve that time for the concept stages.

What I like to do, is go into work right when I wake up (be it painting or writing) and not take a break until I've got a satisfying amount done. Maybe after six hours or so. Then I eat my first meal. THen I take care of business calls, e-mails, etc. Get my physical excercise. Then I go back to the next phase and work the rest of the night undisturbed.

DM I have just read that you and Rick Mays are going to do and Ultimate Team-Up tale together for Marvel. Have you two decided who you want to team up with Spider-Man(this is, if you are able to tell us at this time)? What characters would like like to write about? Is this story coming after Scarab's conclusion?

HHH

Guest_David Mack - Dec 1, 2000 10:48 AM - 671 of 858

Hi HHH,

It will happen AFTER Scarab. So far in talking with Bendis, we had spoke of Master of Kung Fu. But it could change. And I have been speaking with Rick about our next project together after Scarab. We will probably do a project at Marvel. Still discussing the possibilities, format, and characters.

ZEROzero - Dec 1, 2000 7:00 PM - 672 of 858

If I remember correctly you cited Yoshitoshi as an influence, any favorites of his? (print or series of prints) Also does Rick Mays still train with Guro/Sifu Inosanto?

Droideka - Dec 1, 2000 9:00 PM - 673 of 858

Guest_Khaled - Dec 6, 2000 5:45 AM - 676 of 858

Gawd it's been donkey years since I've posted here,....hmmmmm lot's of interesting things to comment on in the world of Mack. First off congrats on the movie rights being bought again,....I guess that's good news,...let's hope they get their lazy asses in gear and do something with the rights , like get the director down, and the animation studio, and maybe some voice people,...any ideas? It's only a year and a lot can happen in 1 year, but at the same time , time flys by very fast .....

Kuddos on the Kabuki Mask. Very nice and affordable , could be a damn nice set to collect slowly, having all 8 would be brilliant. Glad you went through with that,....any news on the sickle though? I'd really love to get that actually.

Hvane't seen the hardcover yet, tommorow probably it'll arrive here in England.

Yeah, need to finish the scarab mini first man before diving into the Marvel pen again,......and glad to hear things are still looking good for Echo to continue :)

Congrats on getting the covers in Unbreakable. Obviuosly haven't seen the movie yet. Many people are ranting and raving about it , and obviuosly your name came up,.....would you post pone the next Kabuki storyline if the director said he'd write a series so long as that 'guy' who did those covers was drawing it?

Am I forgetting anything? Can't remember at this time except that scarab 5 was read too quickly for my liking actually. It was very action packed and some parts were cool but it was over before it started,.....I felt. Maybe because I really want to know where you're heading with this series as you've pointed out before there will be something of a decent ending ,....or something like that,...hell Kabuki hasn't even shown up yet,....c'mon David, get a whip and some chains and make Rick draw like he's never drawn before to finish the last 3 issues..... Thanks :)

Response to Zero in 672:

Yoshitoshi. I used to get a books of collections of his work from the library. I used to look at a lot of his KABUKI theater posters.

Rick still trains at that studio. He recently attended some competitions in Japan with his teacher.

Though your happiness does mean a lot to me, I don't really have any plans for Franklin Richards. But you never know.

Guest_David Mack - Dec 11, 2000 7:42 PM - 682 of 858

To LD in 674:

Yeah, it was really strange for me to see my art in the film /on the screen. Made me happy.

As for the Tigerlily and Ice stories, I'll do'em but I don't want to throw out a time fram until it is all set.

Guest_David Mack - Dec 11, 2000 7:46 PM - 683 of 858

To LD in 675:

I'm glad you are a big fan of Andy Lee. I am too. Totally psyched to be working with him. I don't want to give too much away about the project just yet, because i'm constantly reworking things. But it will be a bold direction.

Andy Lee's work is going to make it look like nothing in comics. I guess the only other artists that do some art that might be comparable are Yoshitaka Amano or some of Muth's work.

Guest_David Mack - Dec 11, 2000 7:52 PM - 684 of 858

To Khaled (Faraday) in 676:

Thanks for the encouragement. The Kabuki Film stuff is coming along fine. Thanks for the congrats on the option renewal.

Yeah, I'd be happy to collaborate in some way with Shyamalan. I'm curious to find out if he picked my cover art personally.

ANd as I said before, I printed your letter in the new Scarab #6. Hits stores first week in Jan.

Has an ad for the Kabuki Mask in it. I'm really looking forward to the mask. It is very realistic and eerie.

Guest_David Mack - Dec 11, 2000 7:58 PM - 685 of 858

To Gandalf in 677:

As for Kabuki collections to start with:

I would suggest the beginning.

Here is the order of reading:

Kabuki-Circle of Blood (the origen and foundation for the other books)

Kabuki- Dreams (Collects my first painted works)

Kabuki -Masks of the Noh

Kabuki-Skin Deep ( I would also suggest this as one of the best Kabuki stories to read)

Kabuki- Metamorphosis (my most evolved work. collects the new 1-9) THis one, Circle of Blood, and Skin Deep are,I think, the most important Kabuki books to read. And you will still understand what is going on if you read these before the others.

Hope that is of help

Guest_LD - Dec 12, 2000 6:49 PM - 686 of 858

David, I emailed Andy Lee recently and he's doing a few commissions for me right now (one is for my dad's birthday.. yeah!) and I am totally psyched about it. He's doing the Endless for me... I'll scan it and maybe post a link once it's done... he's got a little info on your project together on his site and it just sounds really great I'm very excited about it already. Andy is really great (and imho underrated) and you guys together I just know it's going to be brilliant. Can't wait. Keep us updated :)

tripleh - Dec 12, 2000 7:53 PM - 687 of 858

David, I'm glad to hear that Scarab is coming out soon. I has been a fun ride. I was curious what comics you read today, and whose word or art you look foward to seeing every month. Also, you once said that every Noh agent(or most of them) were all going to die. Was there a reason to tell your audience this? Was it your idea to tell a story(maybe the final story?) about their death. And it wasn't important that the agents were going to die, but how they died? It was one of those things that kinda stuck out for me. It was a while ago, so if i'm mistaken, my fault. One more question, have you, or will you do any holiday, or christmas stories?

To HHH,

Glad you are looking forward to the next Scarab. #6 will be out in only a couple weeks. And I think you will really like #7 and #8 which ends the current Scarab story. It's a hell of an ending.

As for what comics i'm reading now, I'm really enjoying all of my pal Bendis' recent stuff. He and Oeming are doing great on Powers. That's a fun book.

As for saying that all the Noh Agents are going to die, I don't think I said that. Sure they are going to die, from the same perspective that we all will in that they are not physically immortal. But I have a lot of story planned for their life which I am currently more interested in.

I did say that the story of Kabuki is sort of a biography of this characters life, from birth to death, and that I have written the next three Kabuki storylines, and that eventually she will die, and that I have outlined that story as well.

As for Holiday or Christmas stories, do you mean the funny things that my friends and family do when they get together? I'm really looking forward to getting together with my friends this Christmas. I remember last year's Christmas dinner and it was wonderful and bizarre. I'm tempted to talk about it here, but I don't want to offend anyone or give them the wrong Idea, so I think I will save it for a story in my books. Now that I think about it, I should make a Christmas Special type book based on this story.

THanks for the help

WHERE THE HELL IS DAREDEVIL!!!!!

Guest_David Mack - Dec 13, 2000 11:19 AM - 691 of 858

He's in Hell's Kitchen fighting crime.

As for issue #14 I saw the finished art for it some time back (forget exactly when I posted about this) so I'm guessing it will be in stores in the next week or too.

ALso Bendis was just at Marvel in New York and said he saw the finished pages to #15.

As I've posted before, I've completely finished painting the art for #16 and #17, and finishing up #18 and will also be painting the art for #19.

Guest_LD - Dec 13, 2000 6:00 PM - 692 of 858

David, are you selling DD pages? Bring some along to the Wonder Con will ya? :)

OK LD

If I have them back at that time, I will.

I had written this massive reply, which was basically along the lines of OH my Gaaawwwd I'm actually getting a letter printed, that's like way too cool,.....must have done some editing, since if I remember correctly it did go on for a bit, but whatever it's got me name and I've told everyone I know,....who have all promised to buy copies,...asked me where the nearest store is. They've heard me rant and rave, and now I've gone so far as actually buying the trades for their birthdays. The Kabuki revolution is at hand, now if only we could get some scarab statue,...got the bust but my Kabuki statue is feeling kinda lonely. As for the DD, I'm so happy about that news, soon we'll get the DD on time, can't wait for all of them (probably because we've all waited long anyway, but can't rush genius ). Thanks again , David for printing my letter :) I'm so jazzed. I really wanted to show you my Kabuki pic, but for some reason this message board doesn't like links,......I'll try and do something about that soon...'talk to ya soon'

Guest_David Mack - Dec 14, 2000 3:33 AM - 695 of 858

Hi Khaled,

I did have to edit your letter a little bit just for legnth reasons. It's still by far the longest letter in the bunch though.

As for links, you can always post those on the Kabuki Message board at www.wfcomics.com or can reach it thru www.Nohtv.com.

Wow, buying trades for their birthdays is a great idea. I'm sending a bunch of my Metamorphosis collections out to friends and relatives for Christmas.

tripleh - Dec 14, 2000 5:56 AM - 696 of 858

David, You're welcome:) I don't know. To me, I love this time of year, and always get a kick when a creater or comic takes its time to remember Christmas. Which is probably why I asked. I was probably mistaken about my remarks about the Noh agents death, but like I said, it was something that stuck in my mind. Also, I just want to give out props to you for spending as much time as you do on this message board. I am rather new to it, but I have been a fan of yours for 3 years now, and it is a great feeling to talk with(in this limited way) some one you admire(Ok everyone, BIG BROWN NOSE here, but you got to admit, it's true). So I just want to say thanks.

.....wait a minute, DD is supposed to come out on time??? Khaled, man I hope you are right, but Thor was suppose to come out last week...so maybe I won't get my hopes up yet. It's a shame too, because it really is a good book.

HHH

Guest_Khaled - Dec 15, 2000 6:06 AM - 698 of 858

Well straight from the lions mouth, DD 14 is coming out Jan 17th. Now seeing as David said that art ofr 15 is more or less done, we'll have that a month after that, and David's already completed 2 out of 4 of his books and I'm thinking probably around page 18 of his thrid issue, giving him like 4 months to finish off his last issue before the new artist team comes aboard with Bob Gale's story arc.....not bad line up really. I mean soon DD will be everywhere. In Ninja, in Yellow, in DD/Spidey and his own regular book, oh yeah and in Black widow ,...oh crap in Marvel Knights as well,......all done by incredibly talented artists and writers. I refuse to get anyone anything that's not a graphic novel if it's a present. So far I've given a Pedro and Me, 2 Sandman:Dreamhunters and 3 circle of bloods...hoping they'll actually go hmmm I might give that a go and see how it unfolds,....I'll keep you posted on whether or not it works.

TheVigilante - Dec 15, 2000 6:34 PM - 699 of 858

Hey, Mr. Mack!

I know I haven't been around for quite sometime and my question is one I've asked in the past, but do you know when Daredevil is due to come out? Do you have any plans to use Bullseye in the very near future? Or Typhoid Mary for that matter? When will Fisk return?

-Vig.

Guest_David Mack - Dec 15, 2000 7:03 PM - 700 of 858

Hi Vig,

DD #14 and #15 will have some Fisk related material in them. In fact #15 has a new piece of his origin in the bulk of the story. When I wrote this issue, it was by far my favorite issue. I hope it is artisticly translated that way. I have no plans for the other two characters you mentioned.

As for the release date of #14 check out the post above yours and the other recent posts.

Peace

hey Mr.Mack! i can't wait to get my hands on metamorphosis! i found out from that interview in tokyo pop! i love circle of blood and skin deep. do you have any artbooks out in the stores? i know how busy you must be, but artbooks are cool, and i think your drawings are cool and you making artbooks from your drawings would be absolutly cool. yeah. :D

Guest_David Mack - Dec 16, 2000 12:29 AM - 702 of 858

Hello Psych,

Glad you like the Circle of Blood and Skin Deep books. I think you'll like Metamorphosis too. Its my most evolved work as an artist and writer so far. And it is by far the best presentation too.

As for artbooks, have you seen the Reflections books yet? I am doing a Masks of the NOh artbook eventually, and a Reflections #4.

Guest_Khaled - Dec 16, 2000 2:29 AM - 703 of 858

Why not Bullseye?

TheVigilante - Dec 16, 2000 1:12 PM - 705 of 858

And another question, Mr. Mack.

WHat was your opinion of past Daredevil storylines like Last Rites or or Fall from Grace?

Guest_David Mack - Dec 16, 2000 8:11 PM - 706 of 858

Hi Khaled,

I saw it! Looks very cool. Do you do a lot of artwork?

DM

Guest_Daredevil - Dec 16, 2000 8:21 PM - 707 of 858

Hi Vig,

To posts 704 and 705:

When Joe asked me to do Daredevil, he didn't want to do the same exact rogues gallery that everyone else always uses. He wanted me to create a new character that was unique to Daredevil and this story. So I started with that as one of the premises.

As for what I thought of the other storylines you mentioned: I'm not familiar with them. I haven't read either of them.

I know Daredevil from the comics I read when I was younger. I read my first DD when I was nine. It was a Frank Miller story from 1982.

I wanted to go with the magic I felt from the world of Daredevil as a kid, rather than be influenced by other interpretations. So that was another premise that I began with.

Guest_khaled - Dec 17, 2000 2:31 AM - 708 of 858

I'm confused, here,.....was that David above or what? Actaully I don't draw anything over the entire year as uni gets in the way, but I go mental over the summer, and so I had this idea to try and put all the Noh agents in one picture as physically since Kabuki went rogue they've never been together,....also I thought that would possibly be Kabuki's nightmare. Need to fix the masks though as Nick pointed out, they are 2 dimensional.

Guest_David Mack - Dec 17, 2000 4:30 AM - 709 of 858

Hi Kaled,

Yes post 707 was me. I won't ever do that again. I just saw your web site that you linked to on the WFCOMICS Kabuki Message board. Very cool.

Guest_Khaled - Dec 18, 2000 12:47 AM - 710 of 858

:: blush blush :: David saw my site, thanks for the comments, you're the first pro I've shown that's been in the industry for more than a year. I suppose it's not because I'm scared of being slammed down, because I slam myself down more than anyone else, it's just that I've never felt good enough that would warrent a pro's attention basically. They can slam it but it won't be as harsh as it could be if you know what I mean,....probably not because I'm talking gibberish now, sorry, thanks for dropping by, but I am doing updates ,...seriously I have done a few better things in the time since the site went up would love it if you could tell me what you think,...if it's not too much trouble. Don't feel obliged or anything it's just cool to show a pro so that I can say, 'yeah , David Makc some my stuff, nodded his head and said 'interesting' '. 'Oh so you met him?' Nah he lives 3000 miles away,...power and glory of the internet :)

TheVigilante - Dec 18, 2000 6:33 PM - 711 of 858

Guest_David Mack - Jan 11, 2001 2:38 AM - 718 of 858

Hello friends. Hope you are having a great new year. The following is a copy of an answer I gave to a poster's question form the World Famous Comics Kabuki Message board. I thought you may be interested in it, as it concerns DD #14 and #15:

Daredevil #14...when is it coming out? Did it come out : already and I just missed it? Also, when is Kabuki#10 : coming out? And is the next Kabuki arc going to be : using a different art style than the previous one.

: I'd like to thank David for bringing out Agents on a : somewhat regular basis. It's a good series, keep it : up!

Hi There. Thanks for the kind words about Kabuki Agents.

I'm still finishing up the art to my painted DD story (16-19) so I haven't started painting the next Kabuki series yet. But I'm sure the art will take on its own personality for that story.

As for DD #14, last I heard is that it hits stores on Jan 17th.

As for DD#15, I saw the artwork today and it is VERY good! I was really concerned at first, because this (#15) is the last issue of the storyline I wrote, and it was by far my favorite issue when I turned in the script. With this being the only issue Joe didn't draw, I was concerned that the new artist (Dave Ross) might not be able to pull off all the subtleties and changes in art style that are in this issue.

But the art and the inks (I saw 11 pages fully inked) really pulled off the atmosphere needed for this issue. Of course the art is a bit different from Joe's, but it actually works in this issue because the entire issue is from the perspective of the Kingpin, and it really gives him a unigue POV, just as Joe gave Echo and DD contrasting POVs in the earlier issues. I really need to call Dave Ross (who i've never spoken to before) and congratulate him on pulling it off. THis was a really tricky issue to do, as it ties up all the other issues. He really pulled it off.

I'm really looking forward to your feedback on the conclusion and entirety of this story.

To all my French and European Readers!

I want to let you know that I have accepted an invitation to the French Festival of Angouleme and will be going to Paris. I will be signing at the Comic Box booth in Angouleme. I've signed in Paris a couple times at Album and really enjoyed meeting my French Readers and I hope to see you in Angouleme. It is this month. January 25-28.

I'm really glad you liked Scarab #6. What did the rest of you think?

Did you see the ad for the Kabuki Mask of the back cover? The actual mask is very amazing.

Guest_David Mack - Jan 14, 2001 10:54 PM - 724 of 858

Hello Vig,

I'm trying to ignore that question. :) Please consider my suggestion that you and everyone else also forget about that concept for now and then ask me again at a later date. At that time I will let you in on what I've heard of it.

Guest_David Mack - Jan 14, 2001 10:58 PM - 725 of 858

Now to change the subject again (please go with me this time):) I've been asked by the Wolverine editor to write a Wolverine Project. He made it clear that I could do whatever I want in my own way, so I'm interested. The funny thing was that I was already thinking of some cool visual ways that it would be fun to paint Wolverine, and had been considering putting him in the Echo series that I've been tinkering with. I think I could get into a good POV when writing him. What are your reactions?

TheVigilante - Jan 15, 2001 10:27 AM - 726 of 858

Well, I just wanted to know how it was going to work so I would know just how I'd feel when I become Daredevil's writer someday and want to fix it or leave it be. Oh well.

An Echo series would be great. Would be real interesting. Would it be ongoing or a mini, though?

Guest_David Mack - Jan 15, 2001 12:08 PM - 727 of 858

We would just start with a mini series and consider things from there.

TheVigilante - Jan 15, 2001 3:30 PM - 728 of 858

Well, that sounds great, now about this blind Kingpin thing.... WHOA! Put down the gun, man.

Droideka2 - Jan 15, 2001 6:45 PM - 729 of 858

GO FOR IT!

Do the Wolverine project. If you're interested, I'm interested. Also, do the Echo mini and have Wolvie pop by. It sounds great.

TheVigilante - Jan 16, 2001 6:28 PM - 730 of 858

Droideka2? What happended to the original?

therealjohnny99 - Jan 17, 2001 11:31 AM - 731 of 858

This goes out to anyone in the know: is the next issue of Daredevil really set to be released next week (@23 or so), or will it be resolicited again? You can't believe the withdrawl I'm going through.

If DD IS set to go out next week, it'll come out the same week as Dogma:SE DVD; how's that for service?

Guest_David Mack - Jan 17, 2001 12:41 PM - 732 of 858

Recently, Ive heard that it will be in stores on the 24th.

TheVigilante - Jan 17, 2001 1:57 PM - 733 of 858

Yeah, what's with the back up this time, though? Not that I'm complaining.

tripleh - Jan 17, 2001 8:06 PM - 734 of 858

To your question about Wolverine and our reactions...can you make a Wolverine story that you think you can make uniquely your own. The angle with Echo, and the fact the she is deft, puts DD in such at different edge that love or hate. That has never been done before, to my knowledge. So with Wolverine, what could you do that has never been done to Wolverine before? The way I see it David, everything you have done has been very unique.

HHH

Guest_David Mack - Jan 18, 2001 3:23 AM - 735 of 858

Thanks HHH,

I appreciate it.

I certainly don't have any need to do the same thing over again. It has to have a unique and personal quality. Naturally, the aspects I explore in the Echo series will go beyond what shades of her that were the focus of the DD series. It will be as series where she is defined on her own terms instead of by contrast to DD.

There will be a lot of Native American undertones, and her own self actualization.

therealjohnny99 - Jan 18, 2001 9:11 AM - 736 of 858

Bloody hell! Alright, Dogma:SE has been delayed. Mack, if DD #14 is delayed... well... I don't know. I'll be mad, that's for damn sure!

Guest_Dave Cummings - Jan 18, 2001 1:43 PM - 737 of 858

David the Wolverine project would be great. Your approach would be perfect especially with Wolverine's use of Martial arts to suppress his berzerker tendencies (though it hasnt been look upon in ages but I know it was a focus during the Miller Wolvie mini) Or just the perspective on the percieved duality between logan and Sabretooth. I would love to hear your intened approach at Wolverine if you did accept that project.

Talk to ya later, either on here or the WFcomics boards.

thanx ~Dave?!?!

Droideka2 - Jan 18, 2001 8:03 PM - 738 of 858

therealjohnny99 - Jan 25, 2001 9:12 AM - 744 of 858

Well, you get off easy this time. DD #14 did come out on time and, once again, topped my expectations. Even with some fill in work by Ross, it all flowed very well. Still, I really hate to see Joe go. I am looking forward to an arc of all Mack art (and I like the way that "Parts of a Hole" has been experimenting with different types of media, in a way preparing us for Mack's work), but after that... I don't know. I'm sure I'll keep on reading, because the story telling has been superb (and Bob Hale is a talented guy), but Ross' art seems kinda plain. Is he Joe's official replacement, or is he just pitching in for the last parts of "Parts of a Hole"? I was sort of hoping we'd get more of a "name" artist to replace Quesada. But, why worry about that now? I've got a new issue of Daredevil. That kind of thing only happens once, maybe twice a year.

therealjohnny99 - Jan 25, 2001 9:30 AM - 745 of 858

Hello Friends,

Indeed, i have been busy at work. Daredevil, Daredevil, Daredevil. It is making me psyched to return to Kabuki. But I also just returned from a huge Convention in France. I put a rundown of it on the KABUKI message board at the WORLD FAMOUS COMICS site at WFCOMICS.com.

Magnificent time was had there. Check out the rant at the WFC board. If not, I can paste it up here as well.

Guest_David Mack - Feb 3, 2001 9:46 AM - 752 of 858

Guest_David Mack - Feb 3, 2001 9:49 AM - 753 of 858

Droideka,

Glad you like the Swamp thing covers. I did three so far, and recently the writer e-mailed me and said theyed behappy for me to do more. So i may do three more if I get the moments.

Guest_David Mack - Feb 3, 2001 9:53 AM - 754 of 858

In response to AH, concerning rumors that I may be doing some writing for Top Cow or the Darkness:

Matt Hawkins was kind enough to invite me to write for Top Cow and The Darkness. He made a very warm and generous offer and I'm very thankful for it.

So perhaps in the future I may do something for Top Cow. But at the moment my plate is way too full.

At the moment I'm concentrating on Kabuki, Daredevil and the Kabuki film.

And as soon as I finish my commitments to DD I will be doing some other Marvel projects and some other creator owned projects at Image.

Guest_David Mack - Feb 3, 2001 9:55 AM - 755 of 858

Thanks for the response to the new DD issue. I look forward to your reactions to the conclusion of the story in #15.

Guest_David Mack - Feb 3, 2001 9:58 AM - 756 of 858

To psycho Visual X:

Happy Chinese New Year to you as well.

I do indeed plan to do stories on each of the NOH.

That is why the AGENTS series of Kabuki was created. Scarab concludes in issue #8, then I will start with another Noh character.

Check out the Kabuki message board on WFCOMICS.com for more details and a community of Kabuki readers to talk to.

Guest_AH - Feb 4, 2001 12:00 AM - 757 of 858

David, well it's good to know that you may show up at TopCow in the future (no matter how far in the future). I'm very much looking forward to it and I hope that the writing bit may also change into a drawing gig. Maybe a cover or two? I'd love to see your take on the Darkness. can't wait for more of your work.

AH p.s. doesn't France just rule :)

Guest_David Mack - Feb 13, 2001 10:22 PM - 762 of 858

Response to Takashi:

Thanks for digging my cover work. As for references, I take some poloroids when necasary. I usually have a lot of friends and girlfriends, model as characters in the course of a book. And I try to keep a file of other reference sources as well.

As for the watercolors, I'm not brand loyal. I use several different brands and I don't remember what any of them are. Most of them are from the cheap kiddie trays. Oh, Prang is one. I also use several brands of acrylic. Winsor Newton is one.

I'm really glad that you like the pacing in the DD story. Let me know what you think of DD#15.

Guest_Gandalf - Feb 17, 2001 4:10 PM - 768 of 858

David- Your DD run just keeps getting better. I loved the endings to 13 & 14. Also, what is true of the Wolvie and Echo minis rumors?

Guest_David Mack - Feb 23, 2001 5:52 AM - 769 of 858

Hello,

I've been at a friend's for the last week. In Atlanta. Doing some rock climbing. Very Mission Impossible 2.

And doing some writing etc.

Guest_David Mack - Feb 23, 2001 5:54 AM - 770 of 858

Hi Gandalf,

Thanks. Glad you like the DD stuff so far. Really hope you like #15. Should be out soon.

As for the Wolvie and Echo projects, I hope to do them not too long from now, but I have to finish up some other projects first.

Guest_David Mack - Feb 23, 2001 5:56 AM - 771 of 858

Here are some upcoming cons I will be at:

Seatle con March 11

In April will be at Atlanta COmicon, Pittsburgh con, and WOndercon.

Guest_AH - Feb 25, 2001 6:44 PM - 772 of 858

David, I've been wanting to ask you something for a while. I knowou don't take commissions because you're busy and all, but do you at Cons? I've seen the Kabuki head sketches you do but I was wondering if you ever do something a little more... fancy. I am going to try to find you at the WonderCon, but I'm assuming you'll be busy there too so I'm just wondering if I should bother you by asking for a sketch or just get my books signed :)

AH

Guest_David Mack - Feb 25, 2001 11:54 PM - 773 of 858

Hi AH,

Hope to see you at Wondercon. I will have original art and prints there, but i don't do any fancy sketching or commisions at cons. I do a "quickie" Kabuki brush sketch for those that have to have one. But i don't commit to anything more than that so I can talk with everyone and enjoy the con.

Guest_AH - Feb 26, 2001 11:54 AM - 774 of 858

David, yeah I figured that : ) I'll bring the book anyway so you can have a look at it. Andy Lee did a whole bunch of stuff in it, I think you may enjoy it. I'll bring my Kabuki books for sure so no way of getting out of signing those : )

AH

Guest_David Mack - Feb 27, 2001 11:40 AM - 775 of 858

A reminder that DD #15 hits stores tomorrow (Wed).

Guest_j99 - Mar 1, 2001 5:38 PM - 776 of 858

And what an issue. I stand corrected. The art in #15, while no Joe, was quite fitting (only one or two awkward moments). Nice wrap up, too, even if Kingpin's "fate" was spoiled by another book starring DD.

I heard #16 has already been delayed, though. What's up with that? How near are you, Mr. Mack, to completing the art for your run?

Finally, your covers (with Joe) have really given DD a unique visage in the magazine rack. Those painted covers allude to the sophisticated, adult comic that DD really is. Any chance that you could stick around to... say... ish #25 doing honors for the covers? That would be very good.

Guest_David Mack - Mar 2, 2001 8:39 AM - 777 of 858

Hi j99,

Glad you liked DD #15.

I think DD #16 was delayed a week or two but it may still be coming out in March. Not sure exactly what the new date is. The reason: While the painted pages I did for #16 have long been done, there were some opening pages that were going to be drawn by Joe. When they found out recently that he didn't have time, they asked me to do the first few pages. So I'm doing this right now. Story wise, these pages were written to BE in Joe's style, so I'm making them look EXACTLY like joe. So the rest of the book that I painted has the appropriate contrast.

As for the rest, I've turned in the finished issues of 16, 17, and 18. I am in the process of Painting DD #19, but it is suspended while I draw these Quesada style pages.

As for covers-

I'm glad you like them so far. I have in fact confirmed that I will be painting the covers of DD at least through DD #25. But I may continue after that as well.

Guest_David Mack - Mar 2, 2001 1:05 PM - 778 of 858

Remember: BENDIS & MACK in Seatle NEXT WEAK!

We will be at the Seatle Comic Convention on March 11. This will be the first time either of us have done a con in Seatle.

We will be signing with no limit. I will have KABUKI back issues, original art, Kabuki prints, posters, t-shirts and more. Same for Brian with POWERS stuff.

Hope to see you there.

Guest_AH - Mar 2, 2001 3:03 PM - 779 of 858

Mmm 10 more DD Mack covers at least. sweet to say the least! can't wait

AH

Guest_David Mack - Mar 3, 2001 3:26 AM - 780 of 858

I have to say, You are going to crack up at these DD #16 pages where I am doing my "Quesada Imitation". I can't get over how surreal it looks.

Guest_AH - Mar 3, 2001 10:02 PM - 781 of 858

Joe Q imitation?! Sounds interesting... so when can we expect the book... which reminds me I better go get issue 15

AH

therealjohnny99 - Mar 4, 2001 8:23 PM - 782 of 858

The letter col. in 15 said to look out for some pages by Joe in your upcoming run. Is that still a go, or are your "Quesada Imitation" pages replacing the pages the col. was talking about?

Also, your run (as writer) was fantastic, but one thing sort of bothers me. Bullseye killed the woman Matt loved. Now, Matt's a heroic guy, so I guess he was able to keep his anger in check, but, jeez, if I was in that position I'd make bringing my girl friend's killer to justice my next priority. Wouldn't DD want to take this guy down rather than start a new law practice? Let's face it, after what he did, Bullseye deserves a good beating.

Guest_David Mack - Mar 6, 2001 3:48 AM - 783 of 858

TO SEAN FERNALD:

Hey Sean! If you are reading this, I want to let you know that I really appreciate your review of DD #15 on the NEXTPLANETOVER reviews section.

March 11

See you there

Damn I'd kill to be there.

therealjohnny99 - Mar 11, 2001 9:32 PM - 786 of 858

I'm just curious, but is there some sort of curse involving Daredevil titles and tardiness? I've now heard that Daredevil: Yellow will also be delayed. D'oh!

Guest_Gandalf - Mar 13, 2001 2:32 PM - 787 of 858

It's more of a Quesada curse.

therealjohnny99 - Mar 14, 2001 10:13 PM - 788 of 858

Yea, but has it infected Tim Sale now?

Guest_Gandalf - Mar 15, 2001 8:35 PM - 789 of 858

Pittsburgh con (with Bendis and Andy Lee)

Guest_Gandalf - Mar 16, 2001 12:27 PM - 791 of 858

David- When are you coming to Dallas? The next con is in June.

Guest_David Mack - Mar 16, 2001 1:32 PM - 792 of 858

Hi Gandalf,

Who runs and organizes the con? June is too soon for me to plan on coming this year (i've got my June schedule slated already), but it has been a while since I signed in Dallas. I'd like to hear about the con there.

THanks

Guest_Gandalf - Mar 17, 2001 8:22 AM - 793 of 858

Its run by somebody called Hotfishstudios. The site name is web.pulse.net/hotfish/. The conventions are usually pretty small. Its kind of nice not having to swarm through a crowd. Too bad you can't make it in June. Maybe for the fall show?

Guest_David Mack - Mar 17, 2001 5:19 PM - 794 of 858

Thanks for the info. Sorry, fall is all filled up too as far as conventions go. I'll be doing Dragon Con and then the Mid-Ohio Con in November. I may also be doing a NY con in Oct or Nov. And I have to leave plenty of time between to finish some projects.

Guest_David Mack - Mar 17, 2001 5:21 PM - 795 of 858

Did anyone see THE ART OF MARVLE COMICS hardcover that came out this week. Pretty cool. I bought one. I especially enjoyed the sections on Kent Williams and Bill Sienkewiez. ANd my Daredevil paintings were also included in the bood. Was cool to see them with out all the cover type and logos.

Guest_David Mack - Mar 17, 2001 5:22 PM - 796 of 858

I also saw that my first cover on Swamp THing shipped this week. 13 i think.

It printed pretty good.

Hoping next one will print as good, as it is very 3d collage.

Guest_David Mack - Mar 17, 2001 5:23 PM - 797 of 858

Scarab #7 will be shipping soon. THis may be my favorite Scarab issue yet. Let me know what you think.

Guest_Gandalf - Mar 17, 2001 6:28 PM - 798 of 858

That is one busy schedule. Haven't checked out the Art of Marvel Comics. Any chance of a David Mack gallery of your DD paintings and other stuff? That I would buy.

Droideka2 - Mar 19, 2001 12:51 AM - 799 of 858

Guest_David Mack - Mar 19, 2001 5:52 AM - 801 of 858

And I will be doing a book that collects all the Kabuki covers that I have ever done from every Kabuki related bookj.

Guest_David Mack - Mar 31, 2001 2:36 AM - 815 of 858

Hi Spideyboy,

In case you don't know, DD #16-19 is a story painted by me and written by my friend Bendis. I'm working on #19 now. I'm also doing DD covers up to at least #25. Just finished cover #21 yesterday.

Talked to Joe Quesada today. He still wants me to do an Echo series some time in the future.

I Recieved an advance copy of DD #16 from the printer today! Very surreal! The art printed great.

It should be in stores in a week or two. I can't wait to see how readers react to it.

Best

DM

Hi David. First question is do you think your storyline will ever be collected in trade for for Daredevil. Secondly, If i wantd to request a commision for a rat drawing, 5 by 7 inches maz for a wedding zine I am trying to create for my fiance, how and where would I contact you. You can email me nordicpress@yahoo.com if you are interested in the request.

Thanks for the great Kabuki work, just rereading the series, Michael

Guest_David Mack - Apr 5, 2001 4:36 PM - 822 of 858

Response to Michael in Post 820:

THanks for reading (and rereading) Kabuki.

I'm sure my recent DD story will be collected in trade paperback. I have no idea when. But I was always under the impression that Marvel Knights plans to collect it.

Sorry I can't help with the rat sketch. I don't ever do any commissions as I'm booked solid on deadlines for my printed work.

Best

Guest_David Mack - Apr 5, 2001 4:38 PM - 823 of 858

All the comic book stores recieved their advance copy of DD #16 today. So I guess that means they will hit stores next week.

I saw it today at my local store (COmic Book WOrld). Printed great!

Let me know what you think.

Guest_SeenThatFlyingMonkey? - Apr 6, 2001 3:27 PM - 824 of 858

Salam, Do u guys get the DC newsletter? if, not, check this out, lol:

DC Comics and WildStorm note that the David Mack credited as a writer on the STAR TREK Æ - DIVIDED WE FALL miniseries is not the same David Mack known in the comics world for his work on Kabuki (Image) and Daredevil (Marvel). The David Mack who wrote DIVIDED WE FALL (along with John Ordover) is a science fiction writer who has worked on the STAR TREK Æ: VOYAGER television series as well as several STAR TREK Æ novels. Issue #2 of STAR TREK Æ - DIVIDED WE FALL is solicited in the current Previews.

So, how many david macks are there? heh, heh.

oh, and david, i really like ur DD stuff, and im thinking of ordering kabuki vol 1 from amazon soon.

Regards, SeenThatFlyingMonkey?

Guest_David Mack - Apr 7, 2001 2:28 PM - 825 of 858

Response to post 824:

I've been speaking to DC/Wildstorm about taking measures to eliminate the confusion of them crediting my name on a Star Trek book. I've been in the comic's industry much longer than this other David Mack and I do not want it to confuse my readers. I appreciate that he may have his own name recognition with his Star Trek work in other mediums and industries, but...

I work hard to make sure that every comic book with my name has a level of quality and my own personal identity. I take it very seriously that my readers can rely on that when they order, purchase or read a book with my name. I intend to take all steps possible within legal bounds to insure that the name recognition that I built in this industry is not diluted, and that my readers are not tricked or confused.

I appreciate DC/Wildstorm for taking the first step in correcting this matter by making it a point on the DC newsletter. But I have the precedent on my own name in this industry, and there needs to be a SIGNIFICANT name distinction on all things credited in this matter. For instance: THere are other Jim Lee's and Frank Millers, and Alan Moores, but they would have sense enough to know that using that exact name likeness in this industry would be unfair to readers and retailers. Not to mention the person who built that name in this industry.

AH - Apr 7, 2001 7:37 PM - 826 of 858

maybe he can use his middle name. I have the same inicials as Adam Hughes and I sign my work with my inicials but I have a signature worked out (kind of squarish and always with the year attached to the letters) so that no one messes it up. Plus, my work looks nothing like his :)

Good luck Dave and don't worry real fans KNOW their David Mack

After Scarab #8, I'll release the Scarab Artbook and then the other projects that I've lined up and been working on. THis con season the focus will be on the Scarab series and DD # 16-19 (My run with Bendis).

Thanks MARTIN

FINAL REMINDER:

ATLANTA COMICON -- THIS weekend!

Me, Bendis, Bagley, Jenkins, Andy Lee and more. FRI-SUN.

I think the site is Atlantacomicon.com

therealjohnny99 - Apr 16, 2001 7:41 PM - 840 of 858

Yea, the Joe Q impersonations from 16 were REALLY impressive. I mean REALLY. I bet Joe, himself, had to look twice on those three pages. As for the rest of the story:

This arc appears to be a great departure from your normal DD adventure, and that's a good thing. BUT, it didn't exactly leave me on the edge of my seat, cursing the month(s) I'd have to wait for the next installment, as your run (as writer) did. Obviously, I'm going to keep reading: the art is fantastic and the story is just novel enough to keep me interesting, BUT (again) if J. Jonah Jameson thinks that no one gives a rat's arse about Leapfrog and his kid, well, why should DD's real readers care any more? I'm not gonna rush to judge until I've got the full arc, though.

Finally, again, it is really amazing that Marvel is publishing a mainstream super hero book with art as non-traditional as your's. Marvel receives a great deal of flak for not having a line like Vertigo, but Daredevil really is pushing the envelope with comic book story telling, so tell them thanks and give yourself a pat on the back for providing one of the best comics on the market. We appreciate it.

Hi there. By Stan and his movie, are you refering to the Spiderman film? If so, I look forward to seeing it. Not sure what you mean by a "comeback" with a DD flick. THere is a DD film script in circulation right now. But I'm busy with my Kabuki film.

Don't forget to bring a lot of crap down here too

AH - Apr 22, 2001 11:51 PM - 850 of 858

Ok so after 3 days at WonderCon and endlessly bugging David for sketches I have to officially say that David is one of the coolest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. I did bug him all day sunday and yet he was nice enough to do all the Kabuki Agents in my sketchbook and take time to talk to me. And he was very busy so I am especially grateful for everything. If any of you haven't met the man and have the chance to, do, he is really really nice.

Thanks a bunch David! You definatly made this a great con for me :) Hope to see you next year or maybe even at SDCC if I do make it down

Mr. Mack

i had a very nice time meeting you and Anh at wondercon. even though i stood there, stuttering and wasting your time, it was wonderful to see you. since i didn't have enough guts to tell you what i wanted to, i'll get it out right now. thank you. you are a very amazing and inspiring person to me, and Anh is really pretty and sweet. i have never seen a comic that comes from the passion of the heart and the deep delrilium of the mind. i will never stop loving kabuki, and i will always look forward to new things from you. since i have met you and when my time has come, i know i will die happy.

-EM p.s please take good care of the goldfishy. it will bring you good luck :)

Psycho x!

Ellen Ma! Great to hear from you. Thank you very much for the gift! I REALLY like it. I will take great care of it, and you may even see a photo of it in a future Kabuki book.

THanks for reading Kabuki, and I'm glad to hear your feedback!

Maybe I'll see you at next Wondercon too.

Warmest regards,

DM

Response to AH:

Anna! Great to finally meet you. I had a great time at the con and I'm glad you were able to attend the whole time. I told Andy Lee about seeing all his work in your sketch book and I told him that he should attend the next Wondercon with me. I think he will. We hope to see you again next year. Thanks for the interest in my work!

Pittsburgh Comicon THIS weekend!

I will be there with Brian Bendis, Mike Oeming, Andy Lee and Anh Tran.

I will have original Kabuki and DD art, prints, back issues, hardcovers, t-shirts, and just about everything else. I will be signing the ENTIRE time. I will sign as many of my DD and KABUKI books that you want to bring.

We hope to see you there!

Hi dave (Can I call ya 'Dave'?)

I've been reading Kabuki from the beginning - and I just found out that I could speak to you on this place. Too cool! Needless to say, I ADORE your work. You are one sickingly talented guy. The main reason I'm writing this is to ask for your permission so that I can start my own Kabuki website and use your artwork. Would this be okay? Oh, and I just read Scarab #7... Very clever how you're beginning to merge it with the 'metamorphosis' storyline... Oh, and any chances of coming to UK conventions?
