So I just picked this up on a whim yesterday. I've always like David Macks artwork and picked up kubuki whenever possible once I was aware of it right before it moved to image, but my store always seemed to sellout so I have no complete runs of  story.

The first issue of this story didn't really grab me because it seemed to repetitive and circular but I found the way he layed out his pages like puzzles intreting so i kept reading. Turns out to be one of the best storys I have read in I don't know how long, so different and alot deeper than I expected.

My only problem was I kept getting knocked out of the story at times, some places it completely pulled you in and then all of a sudden you'd become aware you were reading again because of a page design.

But I'm not complaining, the art is absolutely stunning in range and the story is also very different. I don't know why, but I felt like I was in an Oliver stone movie at times. I really liked this book, I loved the art loved the story itself very much.

DD doesn't show up in person much through the book. But this really made me want to go back and pick up the Kubuki trades very much.

Does anyone know which is the one that he did for Image initially, which volumes are in color and what was the very last kubuki thing he did [before it's current marvel reappearence?]

Dave is always saying that the one thing to read before picking up the new series is Metamorphosis.  You can probably ask him in his board (you may even get a response here), he's always really good at talking with his readers.  Also, there's the davidmackguide.com (not sure if that's the right address, but there is a link to it somewhere in these threads) if you want to know his entire catalogue.

go here, thomas, and it has a list of the 6 trades that collect all of the Kabuki stories from Image.  I read them all at the beginning of the year, because I too, became aware of Mack's work through his work on Daredevil.

His work is excellent, and works well in color, black and white, and whether he is drawing or not.  The symbolism lifts from the page and I found myself more 'drawn in' by his work than by any other creator (although Sam Keith comes close).

I enjoyed Vision Quest for probably the main reason many people didn’t enjoy the story; it was something different. I enjoyed being drawn into the story, and then suddenly feeling that cold feeling. There was a sense of history and a flow of emotion in that story, and you don’t really feel that in many superhero books.

The only thing I didn’t really like about it was Wolverine’s appearance, but that was such a minor issue in an overall wonderful story.

I dislike Mack's art, so that was one strike going into the series.  I figure that whole story could have been told in 1 or 2 issues rather than four and been much more engaging.

--------------
My top 5:

1) Amazing Spider-Man
2) Y:  The Last Man
3) Flash
4) Queen & Country
5) Fables

Criminally underread:  Gotham Central, Walking Dead, Queen & Country, District X, She Hulk, Wonder Woman, Ex Machina, Bloodhound

Hi!
Glad you enjoyed the story and that you are looking for the Kabuki stuff.

The site mentioned: davidmackguide.com is a very thorough site, and you can also check out my site at davidmack.net.

I hope you'll check out the Kabuki collections.
And please post your feedback when you get a chance.
KABUKI: Metamorphosis is my favorite.

And thanks to the other posters chiming in to answer questions :)

Kindest regards,
David
