Some of you may know that I've been working on the Kabuki film with Fox for a while.
I can't talk about much of the film stuff yet, but I was just curious of what you all thought about these things...What opinions of readers may be...

Who do you think would be the best actress to play Kabuki?

Wish list actors for the rest of the cast? Kai? General? Akemi? Link? Etc?

What do you think would be the best story structure for the film?
Like what Kabuki story or stories would you prefer to be included in the first film?
Who do you think would be the best director for that story?

It's been an interesting process these years, and been fun hearing actresses that I admired reading my lines in auditions, and sending signed books to others. Was also great working with John Sayles as was earlier broke on this board.

When I can announce more, I will. But I thought it would be good to hear your thoughts on the subject.

Thanks :)

I haven't read Kabuki, but I knows who I likes!  Kelly Hu!  Kelly Hu!  And MORE KELLY HU!

It's not an educated choice, but I wanna see more Kelly Hu!

So, who is reading Kabuki?  Should I buy it?  Now that it's being published by Marvel, I see it when I pre-order my comics so at least it's on my mind.

Basically, I loved Mack's first Echo arc, but the second one was lame (the covers were the saving grace, I'd buy the comic for them alone).

Glad you liked my first DD run.

I think Kabuki is by far the best example of my work in comics.  As a writer, and as an artist.
To get a good sense of it, pick up one of the Kabuki trades.  I recommend either KABUKI: CIrcle of Blood, or KABUKI: Metamorphosis.

I guarantee you will like it.  If for some reason you don't,  bring it by at a convention, I'm at and I will buy it back from you :)

Also, glad you liked the DD/Echo covers.  Each of the Kabuki trades uses a different art style and medium.  If you liked those covers, I think you will love the Metamorphosis book.

I hope some of you will give it a chance with the new run at Marvel.

If you pick up one of the trades, let me know what you think by posting about it here.

For more info on what each of the Kabuki trades is about, go to davidmack.net.

Best,
DM

I've never read Kabuki, but I will at least start it when it starts at Icon.  Part because I want Icon to suceed, part because Kabuki is just one of those books which I always wanted to try but I buy enough as it is.

I read Kabuki, and have become a big fan.  I picked up all six TPBs over the past few months and savored them like a delectable meal.

If you are a fan of Mack's Echo work (h#&%, even if you are NOT), I would suggest going out and getting the first TPB, Circle of Blood.  It is the story that lays the groundwork for everything that comes after.

Each volume can be read as a stand alone book, but if you read them all, it is definately a more enriching experience.  (Kind of like going in to see a comic book movie like Spider-Man or Daredevil having read the book, versus someone who doesn't read the comic.  You both get an enjoyable experience, but the person who knows more of the history gets a bit more out of it)  Talk to you comic retailer, and ask his opinion, too.  If one of your friends has the TPB and you aren't sure if you want to spend the money, borrow it.  Either way, I highly recommend it.

the art is simly stunning.  The city of Japan is so rich in symbolism, and Mack brings that into play.  The story of a gril paying for the 'sins' of her mother, and trying to find herself while working for a government agency that may or may not have her best interests at heart is simply fascinating.

Let us know what  you think.

David, you are such a sweetie, offering to buy that book back like that.  :D

Anyhoo, I can act as a witness here.  The Kabuki books rock!  It's the most hauntingly beautiful story I've read in comics.

As for who should play the parts in the movie, I don't know.  There was a movie, Princess Blade I saw last summer.  Since then when I read Kabuki, I see the actress from that as Akemi.  Unfortunately, I can't remember her name, and no time to google.  :D

Thank you very much for the hearty testamonials to the books Shwicaz and Spindle!
Glad you are going to try the new series, Reaperfett.

I really appreciate it.

Glad some of you like my DD and Echo work.  I don't really think the DD or Echo stories are very representative of my approach to Kabuki.  I think Kabuki is something that really stands on its own in this medium.  It is my own personal epic-scale story.

If you have any other questions about it let me know.

And for those that have read it, I really appreciate you speaking up on it :)
Thanks Shwicaz and Spindle...

David, I did find the Echo run similiar to Kabuki in the way you told the story.  The way you told the story from inside Echo's head is very much how you tell Kabuki's story.  Also, the characters have built in similarities.  Both had parents that were murdered and were then turned into assasins by their adoptive parents.

I actually sent the books to a friend I went to grad school with in fine arts.  She was completely blown away and ended up talking to her students about you in one of her lessons.  :D

I love KELLY HU --- She's beautiful!

But I picture her more as Bill Tucci's SHI than as KABUKI, because she has more of a glamorous look to her.

I'd have to go with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's ZIYI ZHANG as my choice for Ukiko (Kabuki).  She has more of a natural beauty, not so glamorous.
