Let's hope it'll be better than SPIDER... Holy shit I hated that film.

I was a huge fan of Cronenberg in high school and even met and chatted with the man at a screening and q&a of Naked Making Lunch, a sort doc on the film. It was a personal high point that I always remember fondly. It had been a number of years since he had made a film and then I had heard Crash was coming to theaters. When I heard the premise for the film I was sure that he could make it work. Sitting in the theatre with my girlfriend, after raving for weeks about his movies, my heart sank as the reels spooled on and it just got worse and worse. I held out as long as I could, with her nagging me to leave, and then finally caved in. I figured his next project, eXistenz might be the rebound that I was looking for. No filmmaker can possibly please all his fans all the time, and I approached this with a little trepidation but also an open mind. I enjoyed the film but it felt like an updated rehash of Videodrome (perhaps my favourite Cronenberg film) and ultimately a bit of a letdown. I have yet to see Spider. I always look at it in the video rental store but I haven't the heart to see it yet. I just cross my fingers that he can produce a film that will excite and interest me like his earlier ones.

Really? I loved Spider. It was excellent. I love all of Cronenberg's films. And Spider was a great new step in his filmography. Great concept. Sophisticated execution.

In fact, when my friend watched it, he had a moment just like Spider did in the film. He had a sudden realization that certain memories and photos from his childhood added up to a new truth about his family that he hadn't realized before.

Hrrmmm..
Perhaps when the wife's out one night I will give it a shot.
It's been years since I have seen Rabid or Shivers but they were a horrific delight.
The Fly is also one of the best remakes, or rather re-imagining ever. In my opinion, a perfect sci-fi horror flick.
I was just poking around on the IMDB and found a listing for his current project titled Painkillers; genre-sci-fi starring Nicolas Cage, Ralph (and that's ralf not rafe dammit!! sorry -personal peeve)Fiennes ....
